the GRO in Dublin has Index books with mother's maiden name - from about 1903 .. I was in there today looking at 1906-1910 (not earlier, sorry)

there's one entry which might be of interest ..

1906 quarter 1 - Joseph TAFFE (Kavanagh) Dublin N. 2/3/06 ..vol 2 p 538

didn't see any in 1907-1910

Hi Deevla,

It looks as though we have some common interest in relation to Rosanna Taaffe (nee Kavanagh).  My interest stems from my mother who is a grand-daughter of John Taaffe and Rosanna.  John and Rosanna's first child, Patrick Christopher (born 26-12-1894) was her father.

What I have "discovered" so far ...

John and Rosanna were married on 7th October 1894, in ST. MARY's, PRO CATHEDRAL church.
Parents on John's side were... Patrick Taaffe and Anne Taaffe (nee Graham)
Parents on Rosanna's side were... James Kavanagh and Ellen Kavanagh (nee ?????)

Children... having reference to 1901 and 1911 published census records.... 7 children (2 surviving)

    Patrick Christopher (b: 26-12-1894)
Elizabeth                 (b: 01-07-1896)  see note later.
    Mary                        (b: 18-05-1897)
    John                        (b: 08-03-1899)
    Peter                       (b: ??-??-1901)
    James                      (b: ??-??-1903)
    A.N. Other                (b: ??-??-????)

Note on Elizabeth... while the 1901 census return shows "Lizzie" as a family member of John and Rose, her birth cert shows her parents as Peter Taaffe and Bridget O'Neill.

I have some further info re Peter and Bridget... here's hoping you might have some further info yourself.

Regards

Holmes, Taaffe

Hi Lorg

What a surprise for me this morning I am so delighted. My grandmother (Rosanna Caulfield nee Taaffe) is the granddaughter of John and Rosanna Taaffe. James Taaffe was her father. I don't have all my info with me at the moment and honestly its been awhile since I have looked at any of it, but i will gladly share any info I may have.

Patrick Christopher (b: 26-12-1894)          (d?)
Elizabeth                (b: 01-07-1896)            (d24/12/1903) buried Glasnevin
Mary                        (b: 18-05-1897)            (d?)
John                        (b: 08-03-1899)            (d?)
Peter                       (b: ??-??-1901)            (d?)
James                      (b: ??-??-1903)           (d9/02/1961) My ggrandfather buried Deansgrange

A.N. Other                (b: ??-??-?)                 Joseph (b02/04/1906) (d19/08/1908) buried Glasnevin

I will get back to you in a day or so when I go through my stuff. I would be happy to learn more about Peter Taaffe and Bridget O'Neill.

Regards

Hi Deevla,

Lunch update....

I've only really started this research seriously in the last week or so and the focus has been on the Taaffe side, as the impetus to do this came from my mother... a recent bereavement in my wife's family led to a conversation about the past and here we are!

One correction on my last post... a cross referencing error on my part... the birth parents recorded for Elizabeth were Patrick (rather than Peter) Taaffe and Brigid O'Neill (1901 census sees her as daughter of John and Rosanna).

The cross reference is through Brigid as she appears as a witness to the marriage of Peter Taffe and Catherine Breen (married 09-03-1902)... as you found in your link to church records.

Moving on other info I have leads me to understand  the following are brothers and sisters of John (husband to Rosanna Kavanagh)...

Note older RC church records often recorded the latin version of christian names...

Maria Catherina Taaffe   (b: 10-03-1864)
Joseph Patritius Taaffe   (b: 13-01-1866)  Joseph Patrick
Maria Anna Taaffe          (b: 01-03-1868)
twins {Patricius Guilielmus Taaffe  (b: 26-10-1875)  Patrick William
twins {Petrus Joseph Taaffe  (b: 26-10-1875)  Peter Joseph
Marianna Taaffe  (b: 01-04-1878)

Note there is a transcription error on the church records site for the baptism of John (our common ancestor).  He is listed as John Tuffe (b: 02-04-1873)... parents Patrick Tuffe and Anne Graham.

Patrick and Anne were married in the St. Mary, Pro Cathedral on 03-06-1861.

Parents are listed as follows...

Patrick  -->  Guillelmi (William) Taaffe & Mariannae (Mary Ann) Taaffe

Anne  -->  Peter Graham & Catherinae (Catherine) Graham

Would be really interested to know if you have managed to get any further with Rosanna's history.

Regards
Tony

Hi johnjensen,

thanks for the pointer to https://familysearch.org.... I was having difficulty on the church records site finding any reference to Rosanna Kavanagh.  Hopefully its a solid link (along with the prospective brothers and sisters)... my only doubt is that she is South City and everything else I've found so far is in relative close proximity across what was once Mabbott street - Gloucester Place - Mecklinburgh street.

Will check further to see if I can confirm.

Thanks again for the assist.

Very true Tony.  But just bear in mind that they always lived close to the River Liffey and their last south city address available (Townsend St in the 1876 baptism) is only about 600m from Mabbot Lane across the river, so still a decent possibility.
