Old Windsor/New Windsor
« on: Wednesday 02 March 05 11:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Could someone please tell me what is the difference between Old Windsor and New Windsor? Apart from the obvious that one is old and one is new, that is!! Is there a geographical distance? The atlas doesn't make it clear.

I've been looking for members of the Horwood/Harwood family. Elizabeth cites her birthplace as Windsor on one of the censuses and was married in Windsor in 1840 - but no mention of 'old' or 'new'. I have found IGI's for a Horwood family in Waltham St Lawrence with the correct names and for the correct period but it seems to be a few miles away from Windsor. Help!!  ???
Jill.

HELP!!!

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Old Windsor is about 2-3 miles to the South East of Windsor - with Windsor Castle and Frogmore palace in between them.

There were Horwoods at Old Windsor Green and at New Windsor in the 1851 census - obviously not Elizabeth as she married in 1840 - who are you looking for?

Waltham St Lawrence is as you say a good 10 miles or more to the West of Windsor - I would have thought it unlikly

Sorry forgot to say - Windsor is not in the IGI so you wouldn't find baptisms from there in it

Thanks Nigel and Debbie. I am looking for Elizabeth's father , William Horwood and his wife who I think was also Elizabeth.
Jill. Both would have been born around 1780/90.

Debbie, Thanks a lot for that. I think I'd got Elizabeth as the mother's name  from the dodgy IGI I'd found for Elizabeth Horwood's birth in Waltham St Lawrence.  :)

That's really helped - plus I now know the difference between New and Old Windsor!

Jill.

:) How much recent info do you have on your Horwood's?

Only I knew the Horwood family in Maidenhead.

This is just 6/7 miles from Windsor and Waltham St Lawrence.
 I knew the area well.

Is there anything I could help with as my brother still lives there.

 :) Lesanne.

Hi Lesanne

No, I haven't managed to get any further with my Horwoods!

I'm thinking about writing to the Berks County Records. As Windsor isn't on the IGI, it's very difficult to make any progress any other way.

Still looking for the birth of Elizabeth Horwood in Windsor. From the differing ages given on censuses, she could have been born anytime between 1811 and 1819.

Still looking for the marriage of her parents, presumably some time around 1800-1811. I know from her marriage certificate that her father's name was William but I'm not sure of her mother's name. It could have been the Mary a fellow rootschatter found for me on the 1851 census.

If you can give me any help at all I will be very grateful.

Best wishes, Jill.
