Mary Williams Aberglaslyn
« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 14:41 BST (UK) »
dont know if anyone can help me reached a brick wall. I know that my great great grandparents were Thomas Williams from Gardd Llygad y Dydd Nantmor born 10.11.1827 who married Mary Jones from Brondanw who died, from information i've got, on 3.3. 1929 at 84 yrs old. She is on the 1911 census living in Garddllygadydydd aged 65 with her "son" Thomas Williams whos 17. I know that Thomas Williams is my grandad and biological common sense makes it impossible for her to be his mother in those days! Thomas was born on 7.11.1895 and was illegitimate from what i understand. I know his mother was also called Mary and born @ 1870 and lived in Tyrpeg Bach Aberglaslyn but cant find any details about her. Can anyone help me please?

Hi ger1,

There is an 8-year-old Mary Williams, daughter of a Thomas & Mary, on the 1881 census at Garddllygadydydd. Her name has been transcribed as Marry, as has her mother's. If you search for Marry Williams living in Beddgelert you will see them or if you want the details let me know and I will transcribe them.

Cheers,

Yeah, no problem. The family in Beddgelert in the 1881 census are:-

Thomas Williams 54 Head Farmer born Beddgelert, Merioneth
Marry Williams 35 Wife Farmer's Wife born Llanfrothen, Merioneth
Elizabeth Williams 11 Daughter Scholar born Beddgelert, Merioneth
Marry Williams 8 Daughter Scholar born Beddgelert, Merioneth
John Williams 6 Son Scholar born Beddgelert, Merioneth
Cathrine Williams 3 Daughter Scholar born Beddgelert, Merioneth

'Mary' looks like 'Marry' in both cases and Catherine looks to have an 'e' missing. The address actually looks like 'Garddlygaidydd'.

Good luck,
Gwyn

thanks very much for that. I think there must have been a bit of rush at the time. The farm is actually called Gardd Llygaid y Dydd but have found from 1911 census that it never appears in that form. Diolch yn fawr

No problem.

That's a strange name Gardd Llygad y Dydd. My Welsh isn't very good but isn't that something like Garden for Today's Eyes? I guess there must be a more poetic translation that I can't think of.

llygaid y dydd is the Welsh name for a daisy -  the flower opens during daylight hence llygaid ( eye) y dydd ( the day)

Llygad y dydd for daisy, I've never heard that before - that is a poetic name.

Hi Ger,

Mary Jones of Brondanw was my 3rd Great Aunt... her parents Edward (my Great x 3 grandfather)and Alice his wife are both buried in Ramoth Chapel Cemetery Llanfrothen, along with John Edward and Catherine, both Mary's siblings. Daniel Jones another of Mary's siblings moved to the Llyn Peninsula where most of the ancestors are now. I grew up in Llangybi.

It'd be interesting to chat sometime....
