Harry or Henri Family in France.
« on: Sunday 23 August 09 06:17 BST (UK) »
Hi all, I am trying to find if there is any connection between the Harry Family of Cornwall, with the Henri Family of France.
It appears that Harry (English) could be Henri (French)?
Any help would be grateful.

At what time would the family have come from France to England? There were some Huguenots who ended up in Cornwall (you'd be looking at those who arrived in the 1600s, particularly post-1685 but there was earlier emigration). Occupations can be a hint to possible Huguenot families (there are some typical occupations, e.g. silk weaving).

The name Harry could be perfectly English, as would be the surname Henry; there's no way for sure of saying it came from Henri without tracing back the family in question to find a clear French link.

Well as a fore name Harry is usually short for Harold or Henry. Henry of course is from French.
Harold is an English name from Norse etc.

Looking around the web I see inference that Harry the surname is from Le Herisse and may have come over with the Normans. Some Cornish folk I used to know indeed claimed they were descended from Normans.

Also Harry is said to be from Herri and is also linked to the various Harris names
