Glenavy Census if any?
« on: Monday 31 August 09 06:58 BST (UK) »
Hi

Looking for  the household of the Hickland family.  I am unable to say who the parents were, but have been able to find these names that may be of help.  Joseph born abt 1849, William abt 1840, Richard abt 1844 and David abt 1849, these brothers came to New Zealand in 1862 along with two sisters who became nuns.

Not sure what census you are hoping to find but 1901 is the 1st complete census for Ireland and only small fragments of earlier ones exist. 1911 census is online (free)-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Suzy,
There is no Irish census for that period but we have what is known as a census substitute. It is called the Griffith's valuation and was a survey of all property in Ireland for taxation purposes.
In Co. Antrim this was carried out about 1862. It shows what appears to be four Hickland families in the parish of Glenavy, all renting small farms.
Thomas  townland of Ballyvanen
John       townland of Aghadolgan
William   townland of Deer Park
Thomas  Townland of Fenmore.

Hi

Have you tried http://www.glenavyhistory.com/index.html it has a list of local churches. You could try and contact one of these to see if they have any records of the Hickland Family.  Church records are you best bet for finding dates of Birth before 1864.  Civil registration of Births start in 1864.

Thanks for the addvice.  I was lucky enough to of come across a 1851 census or something like it for another Irish family, that is why I thought I could try my luck with the Hickland's.
Yes I have discovered the Glenavy site yesterday, very interesting.
Is there a on line site to trace people moving to Australia and New Zealand?  I notice there were plenty on Irish people going to the United States.
