Surrey is a county that borders London to its north. Over the years Surrey has lost major sections of the county to the ever encroaching London.

METROPOLITAN SURREY


London’s growth became ever more rapid at the beginning of the C19th. Between 1889 when the London County Council was formed and 1965 when Greater London was created, London formally absorbed parts of the surrounding counties including major parts of north Surrey.
By 1900 the areas of historic Surrey then part of the County of London were


Battersea, Bermondsey, Camberwell, Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth


In 1965 more areas of Surrey became part of Greater London (with Battersea, Bermondsey and Camberwell merging with Southwark and Wandsworth)


Croydon, Kingston-upon-Thames, Lambeth, Merton Richmond-upon-Thames, Southwark, Sutton and Wandsworth


Many of the records for these areas of ‘Metropolitan’ Surrey are held at the London Metropolitan Archives and the archives of the local London boroughs south of the river Thames.




THE LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES is the largest local authority archive in the United Kingdom covering the whole of Greater London.

COLLAGE many images both paintings, drawings and photographs from the Guildhall Art Gallery and the London Metropolitan Archives. The collection extends to images of Surrey.
