Abinger St Newcastle 1861+1871
« on: Thursday 03 March 05 22:59 GMT (UK) »
If there is SKS out there with access to the Census of 1861 could they look up the details of the family of Robert Kirkup b abt 1824, I think he was probably a blacksmith and his wife was Elizabeth born in Knottingley/Ferry Bridge Yks.  They should be living in Abinger St but I don't know which district of Newcastle that might be.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Do you need 1871 as well? (I don't have access to 1861, but wasn't sure from your message whether you need 1871).

Yes Chris that would be great.  I think by then their son William James would be 2 or 3.  I am also trying to track him back to a birth, I have a marriage certificate which gives his father as James Kirkup, but of course that doesn't help much!
Thanks
Brian :)

I'm glad you mentioned William James.

I dived in with the question about 1871 before looking to see whether I could find them! I then found a possible Elizabeth, born Ferry Bridge, widow, who had lived at Newcastle about 10 years previously, but was unsure whether this would help. The William James seems to clinch it.

1871 census: Durham, Stainton, Thornaby Road  RG10/4900 Fol 126 p23
Elizabeth KIRKUP Head Wid 48 Keeper of Lodgers Ferry Bridge
Ann KIRKUP Daur Unm 19? School mistress Newcastle on Tyne
Meggy KIRKUP Daur Unm 12 Scholar Newcastle on Tyne
William James KIRKUP Son 3 Yorks, S Stockton
Henry POTTER Lodger Unm 27 Boiler Maker Newcastle on Tyne
John SIMON Lodger Unm 26 Patern? Maker Heydon Bridge

Hope this helps,
Chris

Thanks Chris
That is certainly them. Maggy went on to marry Thomas Ronchetti a chemist.  At least I know that by 1871 Robert had died.  This means that I can look for his death in the period between Williams birth and the Census.  Thanks for you rhelp.
