« on: Wednesday 02 September 09 10:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,im seeking any info at all on Alfred Aires and his family.Hes on the 1861 with his wife and three children,no birth places or first names given for them,no birthplace for Alfred, but date is c1821.They are with a family called Mathews and are lodging in two travelling waggons near the county ? Linfield Heath on 7th April. The district is Chalwood nr Reigate.I suspect the two families are related, possibly Alfred married Charles Mathews sister, looking at birthdates. If anyone can help me with any info on either families id be very grateful, regards, nel.

Hello again, ive been trawling through the census for possible Aires/Ayres born around 1850-1856,and ive found a Neptune Ayres born 1851 Overton,Hampshire and family on the 1881/91 in tents, western Green or Chertsey. Also on 1881 is a Henry Ayres born 1854 Lewes,Sussex in a caravan on Epsom Downs with family, with him is Joseph Ayres born 1844 Shalford,Surrey and family.Henry also has a brother William born 1859 East Grinstead.I cant find any of these families before they appear on the 1881.I know its a stab in the dark, but what else can you do when you have no names or birth places to go on?Any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks, nel.

On the whole I think there is unlikely to be any close connection (if any at all) but I have 4 Alfred Ayres born between 1852 and 1874 in the Cabridge area. Have a lot more Ayres if you think it's worth pursuing, and go back to around 1700, but all in the same area.
Ayres Brignell Cornwell Harvey Shipp  Stimpson Stubbings (all Cambs) Baumber Baxter Burton Ethards Proctor Stanton (all Lincs) Luffman (all counties)

Many thanks Redroger, the Alfred thats connected to my Mathews was born c1821 place unknown. The 1861 states he has a wife and three kids with him in a travelling waggon, but gives no details for them. The Ayres who appear on 1881 are in waggons/tents and were born around right time. Also,Neptune has a son called Alfred, far from conclusive i know, but intriguing nonetheless, regards, nel.

Hi Nel

The Matthews and Ayres are closely related and have been the last 300 years!

The Alfred Ayres I have in my family tree had a daughter called Mary Ann Willet, who married Charles Matthews. They had 6 children, Emily, Charles, Nora, laura, Job & Robert.

If you need any further information let me know.

Hi Nel

I've got a burial ref for an Alfred Hares. He's recorded 9 April 1866 at St Martin's, Epsom, Surrey, aged 59, described as 'travelling through Epsom'.

Perhaps a relative of your man? Perhaps another spelling of Aires/Ayres to search by?  :)

Best wishes

Hello,

ive had another look at the 1861 census entry for Charles Mathews and it looks like this:

Charles Mathews born 1830 N

Mary                              1831 N

Mary                              1846 N

Alfred                             1847 N

Phoebe                          1851 N

Emily                               1852 N

Attie                                1856 N

Charles                           1857 N

Eliza                                1858 N

Alfred Aires                      1821 N

???     Aires                      1826 N

???     Aires                      1851 N

???     Aires                       1852 N

???     Aires                        1856 N

Something new that wasnt in the information about Charles before is it now says his spouse is Mary Mathews(Aires).

I had been assuming that Alfred Aires wife was a Mathews, but it looks like it might be the other way round.
The problem is where did this info come from and is it accurate?Normally if its user-submitted it says that.

Lorraine,

you say that Mary Ann Willet is the daughter of Alfred Ayres,so im wondering if the younger Alfred Aires with them is her brother.
Do you know why Mary Ann was Willet instead of Ayres?

To Sharon,

many thanks for this,it could be a death for Mary Willets father,or the younger Alfred whose with them.Im going to have to try and establish whether Alfred Ayres is Charles Mathews brother-in-law,

Nel.

Hi Nel

Just looked at the 1861 census again, I would say that THAT Alfred Ayres is indeed her brother. It is def not her father as there is only 10 years between them.

Still on the case  ???
