Great find Carol :)

John HOLT married Martha LEACH, 10 November 1840, Totternhoe, Bedford.

Although this has NOTHING to do with trying to find the connection of Lavender Shelton to Alfred George Shelton and why Amelia is with them in 1871 Census :D

I seem to be able to find no connection as yet.

Yes in 1871 at 34 Offa Street(public house) St Paul's Bedford.

Alfred Shelton head, and family and Amelia Shelton aged 22 described as a visitor, however that has been written over the top of something else, and the enumerator changed his mind- why?

She's a Milliner and born Hitchin all the rest of them born Bedford.

You say that in 1841 Lav is not born in county of Herts,so looks like he's probably Bedford too then,as is Alfred.

Do you have Lav in 1851?

So we have Alfred George born 1823 son of Robert and Ann.
And Lavender born 1804 son of William and Frances.
Sounds like Alfred is his nephew or maybe a cousin, but I'd bet on nephew ;D

Now to prove it LOL

This is great, thanks guys! I thought Lavender and Alfred were cousins but I guess uncle and nephew makes sense, so Amelia is Alfred's cousin.

Carver is right for Robert Shelton I'm sure because in the 1871 census his son Henry Robert is listed as 'Carver, gilder'. Others in the family are listed variously as carver, gilder and paperhanger. So I think they are upmarket interior decorators.
