Hello Chris,

Could you please help with early census look ups for my WESTON family?

Most WESTONs being researched appear to come from Mayfield, but my John was born in 1821 in Heathfield.

In 1841 he was single, but where?

By 1851 he was married to Mary COOK (age 24). The marriage occurred in Brightling in 1849.  By 1854 he was definitely living at Burwash - Perrymans. There are likely to be 2 children John 6 and William 3.

John was involved in milling as was his father, also John, but I have no information on the elder John or any other siblings.

Thanks

Clive

Hi Clive

Have read your lookup request over and over again trying to find ways in which I can help you.

Most of the information I have is not of any use to you - plus as yet, I do not have the 1841 census for Heathfield.

I have looked on the 1851 census for Burwash - but he is not there?, although you say he was there in 1854.

Am now going to take a slow look through the rest of the 1851 for East Sussex to see if I can locate them

Hi there Clive

Could you please help with early census look ups for my WESTON family?

Found them in Battle Registration District

HO107/ 1636/ Folio 452/ Page 11 – Stonesdown Cot Crofts, Brightling.

WESTON John, Head, Marr, 29, Ag Lab, born Brightling, Sussex
Mary, Wife, Marr, 24, born Brightling
James, Son, Unm, 4, born Brightling
William, Son, Unm, 2, born Brightling

You have an extra child in James, but where is John? - He is down the road staying with his grandparents.

HO107/ 1636/ Folio 437/ Page 24 – Tolesters Cottage, Brightling.

MARCHANT William, Head, Marr, 65, Farmer of 20 Acres, born Brightling
Sarah, Wife, Marr, 66, born Brightling
WESTON, John, Grandson, Unm, 6, born Brightling

HO107/ 1636/ Folio 452/ Page 23 – Tolesters Cottage, Brightling.

MARCHANT  Robert, Head, Marr, 58, Ag Lab, born Brightling.
Mary, Wife, Marr, 57, born Brightling
George, Son, Unm, 12, born Brightling

But that now poses a problem as you said -
By 1851 he was married to Mary COOK (age 24). The marriage occurred in Brightling in 1849.  By 1854 he was definitely living at Burwash - Perrymans. There are likely to be 2 children John 6 and William 3.

Should it not be Marchant rather than Cook ?

You try to answer 1 problem - it gives you 2 or 3 more

Hello Chris,

Yes it does pose more problems, but not quite as you might think!

I knew of James Weston, but he was believed to have died in infancy, I now know that it was after 1851 so I will renew my search for him.

Younger John was not Mary's child, so it does not surprise me he was living with his grandparents, but John's (1821) first wife was Sarah Croft so I am completely surprised by the Marchants.

The Marchant connection I have is as a possible ancestor of John's third wife whom he married in 1859!

There was no elder John in Brightling in 1851, I am beginning to suspect he had died much earlier.

thanks again, any further info around these families in Briightling much appreciated.

Clive

Hi Chris,

I wonder if you lookup the name DEASON in the 1871, 1891 and 1901 Census for Sussex please.  There isn't too many of them as they originate from Cornwall.

Many thanks once again for your kind offer and work.

Kind regards
Rick
