Schoolmaster Charles H ZUCKER
« on: Monday 07 September 09 05:08 BST (UK) »
Would anybody be able to tell me anything of a Schoolmaster & his family at about the 1900=1920 era.
I do know they lived in Bury,Lancashire on the 1911 census, so I'm hoping they were there quite awhile. The 1901 census shows they had a daughter Agnes, but she maybe elsewhere by 1911, this was also his wife's name.
Zucker is an unusual name so I'm hoping it stands out in peoples minds and someone maybe able to tell something of this family.

Geoff,

Are you sure that Agnes is a daughter? She is showing as a niece on the 1901 census image - looks to be a daughter or stepdaughter of Charles's brother Ernest.

Seems he was the last teacher on the alphabetical list in 1917! http://www.genealogyreviews.co.uk/fhmfeb07_teach.htm

Google Books has this tantalising reference:

"Title: Testimonials in favour of Charles H.L. Zucker, candidate for the headmastership of Dollar Institution
Author Charles Henry Leon Zucker

Hi ShaunJ,
Thank you for posting the link for me and your replies.
In the matter of Charles's daughter, her name was Agnes. The 1901 census shows this & the daughter of his brother Ernest was Florence. She was named after the younger sister of Agnes & Maria. This sister {Florence} was also in the house of Charles in the 1901 census.
Ernest married Maria in 1891 & Charles married her elder sister Agnes in 1894.

Cheers
Geoff

Geoff,

I hope I'm not stating the obvious. Zucker is German for sugar, and would suggest that Charles had German or Austrian origins.

The 1901 census shows this

The 1901 census lists the household as follows:

Charles HL Zucker - Head  39
Agnes A - Wife 31
Ernest H - Brother 36
Maria - sr-in-law 28
Florence E- niece 8
Agnes S - niece 6
Florence Laverick - sr-in-law 16

Have you found Agnes' birth registration? I think this may be it in 1Q 1895:

Suter  Agnes     Wandsworth  1d 611

Hi ShaunJ,

Thanks for the census lookup. The lookup I have shows Florence E as Charles' neice, Agnes S is shown as his daughter aged 6 years and born in Streatham.

quote; Have you found Agnes' birth registration? I think this may be it in 1Q 1895: Suter  Agnes     Wandsworth  1d 611

Agnes & her sisters were all born in Co Durham. There is a long story  about these girls and their surname. Due to problems with miners being black banned their parents went to Northumberland for about 8 years to work in the pits there. They assumed a different surname after coming back to Durham from Northumberland, again to obtain work in the pits.

There was also very serious problems with their mother so the girls kept that assumed surname and they left home. They used that surname right up until they married and assumed their husbands name. They were born with the surname HENRY and the surname they adopted was LAVERICK. It was the surname of their grandmother in her 1st marriage.

Cheers
Geoff
