Geoff,

I hope I'm not stating the obvious. Zucker is German for sugar, and would suggest that Charles had German or Austrian origins.

Justin
Hi Justin,
The first of my Zucker family to arrive in England was Charles' father Leon. He arrived sometime prior to 1863 when Charles was born. He came from Austria.

Cheers
Geoff

Whoever gave you that 1901 look-up was mistaken, Geoff. There is only one census page for this family and it  shows 6-year-old Agnes as the niece of Charles.

Charles HL Zucker - Head  39 teacher Westerham Kent
Agnes A - Wife 31,   Philadelphia Co Durham
Ernest H - Brother 36 watchmaker jeweller, employer, Dalston London
Maria - sr-in-law 28  Philadelphia Co Durham
Florence E- niece 8  Newington London
Agnes S - niece 6  Streatham London
Florence Laverick - sr-in-law 16 Westoe Co Durham

Even if Agnes was Charles' niece, Leon Zucker was still her grandfather.

He became a naturalised British subject in 23 Feb 1858.

Do you have these papers/certificate already?

You should be able to find the family in '61 census.

I'm a bit confused about your 'black miners' explanation. Is 'black banned' a special term, or are you saying that they were of Afro-Caribbean extraction?

Streatham is in south London, not Co. Durham.

Hi JustinL,

I think we have a mixup here. ;D You are refering to 6 year old Agnes born in Streatham not Co Durham, I'm refering to Agnes her mother,  :) she was born in Shiney Row, Penshaw,Co Durham even though she states Philidelphia on later census papers, and which I've just learned is a couple of hundred yards away from Shiney Row.
The term "Black Banned", I thought it was used world wide, apparently not. :-\ It means the person or persons with that label is banned from, in this case, working in any pit in Co Durham. Hence the change of Surname when the family went back to co Durham.

I know, I have a tendency to write as I speak, always in trouble for it, :-[  but that's me, and I'm too old to change now.

Thank you for the date of Leon's Naturalization, No I don't have the papers yet.
I will check out your link.
Cheers

Hi ShaunJ,

Any chance you could scan or send me a link to that 1901 census page please?.

It looks as though that listing of Agnes SUTER 1qtr 1895 at Wandsworth is my Agnes.
Thanks for the tip.

Cheers
Geoff

In the chess match between Wesley College and Penistone on 15 April 1882, A M Foster (W) is listed as winning 2-0 against A Hanwell (P).
How do I find out more about A M Foster?

Not sure why you have hijacked this thread to start a new query!

If you look in the 1881 census there is only one "A Foster" at Wesley College - Amos Foster, aged 15, born Selby
