Clock & Watchmakers Asylum
« on: Wednesday 09 September 09 11:11 BST (UK) »
Hi - I wonder if anyone can help.

I have a potential sighting of my ancester William Saunders b c 1826 Clerkenwell living at the Clock & Watchmakers Asylum, New Southgate, East Barnet in 1891 and 1901.

 RG12 1054/9

I guess the apprentice records etc. are at the Guildhall Library, but I have been trying to find out exactly where this place was and if it still exists in some form.  I believe it was more a group of almshouses, rather than an asylum.

Many thanks

ec

Hi,

Have you tried   -  collage.cityoflondon.gov.uk      A search on this site for 'Colney Hatch, Barnet' will produce a picture of the C & W Asylum and brief details.

Hi Peter

Yes, thanks for your reply - I have seen these before.  I was really hoping someone could pinpoint the location and/or tell me if anything remains

Thanks for your interest

There is a piece in the Islington Gazette 6 June 1857
Clock and Watchmakers Asylum
"Last Monday  the ceremony of laying the foundation of an asylum for the dcayed and aged members of the above highly important and resected trades took place."
"situated in a delightful spot on the eastern side of the Colney Hatch Station on the Great Northern Railway"
"To be tudor style red brick with handsome stone dressings"
"accommodation afforded, home, light and fuel and £20 per annum to men and £13 to widows"
Definitely something similar to almshouses I would think.

Hi

Gosh - this is a very old post now :)

Andy H - yes,  Harold Saunders was the son of my great great great grand fathers brother.  I did go to the City of London archives in Aldermanbury back in 2009 and managed to get a look at some of the records along with some fundraising documentation for the C&W Asylum and this seemed to be records for my GGGrandfather
