St. Helier - Silvanus Austen Balsom
« on: Friday 04 March 05 21:09 GMT (UK) »
Would dearly love some kind person to lookup Silvanus Austen Balsom in the 1851 or 61 census.

From the 1871 census entries for his widow and children, one would expect  entries  for Silvanus as head of household in both the 1851 and 1861 censuses in St Helier.

In 1851 he should appear with his first wife grace (nee Rodd)  and daughter Charlotte.

In 1861 he should appear  his 3nd wife Marianne (nee Taylor) and children Charlotte, William,  Jane, Louisa, Elizabeth , Alice, Edith and Henry (having married and  lost a 2nd wife Elizabeth? (nee  Taylor) in about 1854/5).

Age, occupation,  and origin  of this strikingly named man & his first and second wives  are currently shrouded in mystery - any facts  greatly appreciated.

In case it helps:
- Possible variant spellings include silvanus, sylvanus; austin and austen;  balsom, balsam and  balson.
- Silvanus should have been born about 1820

Silvanus died between 1862 and 1871, but his  widowed 3rd wife & children appear in the 1871 and 1881 censuses  at 10 Chevalier Road, St Helier.  (RG10/5756).

Many thanks

I have looked in the 1851 census index for Jersey, but can't find him - including variant names.

The only Balsom I can find is -
John - aged 37
Maria - aged 39
Harriet  aged 13    (all St Helier, district 44)

Sorry.

Greatly appreciated,  Mike :-)

That's very useful information, as I think that
John was Silvanus's brother.

I am now attacking the problem from various directions via snail mail
& hope to have things to report in due course.

just a note so say that the 1861 Channel islands census is now online & someone kindly found and did a personal lookup of Silvanus in the 1851 census.  I have summarized the new information from this and other sources on the main rootsweb site. Many thanks, all. Mersenne

Mersenne -

Sorry - I don't know how I missed him in the 1851 census index (...errors and omssions?).  If you let me have the reference - district, page no etc. in 1851 and '61 I will be happy to see if I can follow-up any more details for you...

Hi Mike!
Very kind of you to offer! Much appreciated :-)
I dont have the district and page number ect, Im afraid.
The thing that made the entry non-obvious to find was that the
presumably french speaking census taker (at least that's my theory)
had mutated the surname from Balsom to Balson.
The spelling that Silvanus appears to have preferred  'Balsom'
can be found in the baptism entries of his first two children.
