Amey/Scott
« on: Saturday 12 September 09 05:56 BST (UK) »
Hello All.
I am wondering if anyone can help me, please. My gggrandparents were Henry(Harry) Amey and Mary Ann Scott. They married Dorset abt1847 and had three children: James Scott abt1848 Mary abt1850 Emma 1851(she is new born baby in 1851 census) Mary died sometime mid /late 1850's Henry married Margretta Lush and migrated to Australia with new wife and 3 children of first marriage. I know about Henry but am trying to find out about Mary(nee Scot) When did she marry Henry ? Where when was she born. Who were her parents? What siblings did she have? I am hoping someone may know of this family. I know it's a long shot but am keeping my fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!
                           Regards
                                       Marg.

Hi,

Found this on FreeBMD but the marriage was in Wiltshire:

Harry Amey  MarQ 1846   Alderbury   8    363

Possible bride:  Mary Ann Scott

If this is the right couple then a copy of the certificate should show the name and occupation of Mary's father which might help you to find the family in 1841.

The 1851 census you mention states she was born in Wimborne Dorset - there is an older Mary Scott (c1797) a Visitor, also born Wimborne - mother ? Helping with the newborn ?

Thanks Nanny Jan
I don't think Mary and Henry would have married in  Wiltshire. But who knows? Henry was born in Hampshire But seems to have been in Dorset for some time. There seem to be plenty of Ameys in Dorset!!!
Thanks for your help Nanny Jan,

Hello Past Master,
I don't know who Mary Scott is. Could be mother Aunt or no relation at all. Family legend says when Henry decided to come to Australia, Marys parents wanted the children to stay with them. I often wonder if they might have been their only grandchildren. It must have been hard to farewell loved ones almost certainly for ever. They probably worried over what could happen to young children on the long voyage to Australia. Rightly so,too.!

Thanks for your help. I am still keeping my fingers crossed.
                                             Regards
                                                        Marg.

Hi,

A search on FreeBMD for an Amey/Scott marriage gives just that one in Alderbury; which covers the Salisbury area.

If they married in Dorset then either the marriage record has been lost/mistranscribed or perhaps they never married.

Where did you find the information about them marrying in Dorset?

Nanny Jan, you have really got me thinking now! I am pretty sure I have Marys death: Mary Ann Amey died1855 Jul-SeptQ Dorchester (vol 58 p 208) I also found a Christening on IGA  for Mary Ann Scott 29 july 1827. Wimborne Minster Parents  James Scott & Mary. 1851 Census has Mary age 23 born Wimborne. Would death cert tell me where they married?
Thank you taking the time to help me.
                        Marg.

Hi,

English death certs give no information about marriages.   It will show where and when the person died, their age, occupation (if a women it is usually wife/widow of.........), the cause of death, name and address of the informant, and when the death was registered.

However the information is only as good as the informant's knowledge of that person!
