Hi,

The census only shows who was in the house on one particular night.

Pentridge is not far from the Dorset/Wiltshire border so perhaps Mary had moved into the next county for work.    Undecided

I thought as much, Nanny Jan. That leaves me with two possibilities.
The older Mary Scott  in the 1851 census is not the mother of the younger Mary, or the family I thought (hoped) were Mary's family are not hers at all.

Regarding the above marriage. The bride was aged 18 .Would she have needed her fathers permission to marry?

Not this family then ? Marys age is pretty good to match her being 18 at marriage ?

Hello Passed Master, I am pretty sure (99.9%) this is Mary and her family. I would like to find out about her parents. Where/when they married, mothers maiden name etc. I am not sure where to go next!!! There is a marriage (1821) James Scott of Kingston Corfe & Mary Ann Clapcutt, which looks promising. The marriage was at Swanage. I found a Mary Ann CLAPCOTT witnessing another marriage in Swanage just prior to that, so she must have lived there.But..............
Thank you for taking the time to answer me. I really do appreciate it

Judyb44,
Thanks so much for that. I was thrown by Mary Scott (snr) being on the Census with Harry,Mary and family, as I had her with her husband and family. Its quite normal that she would be with her daughter to help with the new baby and other children. I have Mary & Harrys marriage cert. I guessed Charles was his brother. Thought the other one was Eliza Shewring. I have been trying to follow up the family of Mary Ann. Found a marriage for James Scott/ Mary Mitchell in Wimborne Minster, which looks a possability, so plan to follow it up when I get a chance
