Eliza Jane Wareham
« on: Monday 14 September 09 19:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find Eliza Jane Wareham s parents.

She was born abt 1857 in whitchurch, Dorset
She appears to have grown up with her grandparents Honor (Symonds) and John Wareham, at least that is where I find her in both the 1861 and 1871 census.
Any help would be great, thanks

The Eliza Jane WAREHAM born in Shaftesbury is listed with her parents William and Elizabeth in 1871.

John and Honor Wareham's children, according to the IGI and the 1841/51/61 censuses were Eliza (1837), Emma (1838), Elizabeth (1841), Francis, Charlotte, Margaret and Susan.
The only son is living as a 17 year-old servant in 1861, so it seems likely that Eliza Jane was the illegitimate daughter of one of the first three girls. Emma (12) and Elizabeth (10) were both living at home in 1851 and Honor was on parish relief.

Under those circumstances it was not uncommon for the grandparents to bring up the child.

There are a number of Eliza Jane Warehams around that time. This is the baptism record of the one I believe you are looking for - St Peters, Shaftesbury.

1856; 26-Oct; WAREHAM; Eliza Jane; daughter of; William & Elizabeth; sawyer; Coppice St.
Foot - Sturminster, Manston, Child Okeford, Cann, Iwerne (both of them), Boscombe, Bournemouth.
Wareham - Anywhere mid dorset or Southampton.
Niblock - Belfast
