Fordoun Mortcloths Register
« on: Tuesday 15 September 09 10:19 BST (UK) »
Hello

Does anyone know please how I may be able to access these as I have numerous ancestors who lived in Fordoun in the 1800s.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Many or most of the OPR death records are in fact Mortcloth records. If they exist you should find them on SP. Look at the section on Whats in the Database to see what parishes and years are covered.
GRAY - Inveresk; Lanarkshire
LINDSAY - Lanarkshire
PURDIE - Lanarkshire; W. Lothian
POZZI - Elgin; Lancashire
MACKENZIE, MORISON - Isle of Lewis
ARCHIBALD, HAY, HUNTER, SNADDON - Clackmannanshire
COXON, HALL, JACKSON, SHOTTON - Northumberland

I searched the Fordoun Parish Register quite a few years ago, as one branch of my family comes from there.  This was shortly before the Parish Registers were added to Scotland's People, so my research was done from microfilm at an LDS Family History Centre.  There was, as far as I recall, no Mortcloth Register.  There was, however, a burial index, giving the date of burial, name, address (farm or village name only), marriage status, cause of death and age.  As an example, one of the entries I noted reads: 1824, February 26th; Helen Cruickshank; South Blairs; Married; Consumption; 57.  The entries I noted down covered the years 1806 to 1834.  I cannot recall if there were any earlier of later entries - certainly there were not many years covered compared to the main register.
