*completed* Occupation unclear - help please!
« on: Wednesday 16 September 09 22:02 BST (UK) »
In 1861 my 21 year-old great-great-grandmother was the (solitary) servant to a household of 9 people, all but one women, three of them elderly.  Can anyone help decipher, or confirm, the "occupation" of the 80-year-old head of the household, and of the 50-year old, please?
For the first, I've got as far as
Widow of
[Retired] [ord(i)nance] [Store] [Keeper?][???]

and for the second I have
Widow of J [C] Chetham E.I. [???] - presumably East India something, but not the obvious "company".
We're in Portsea Hants, so very obviously naval connections.

The full reference is RG9; Piece: 643; Folio: 51; Page: 4
or search on Louisa Clark born 1840 Over Wallop

Thanks for any help!

Hello iconstab

I can only make out the last word on the 80 year old entry. I think it is Woolwich.......

Will keep looking.

Enjoy Rootschat. :)

Widow of Retired ordin...(??)  House Keeper from Woolwich.....maybe!

Perhaps you could find her in a previous census, ideally with her husband.

Thanks for all these - yes, now spotting the daughters being born in Woolwich and Plumstead is a clue I missed.....

Can't find Sarah Chetham in 1861 yet...

I think it might be Ordinance store keeper Woolwich and perhaps he worked at Woolwich Arsenal?

Also perhaps the other is E[ast] I[ndia] Service?

Sorted - thank you all.

I have found this confirmation for Store rather than House: "WOOLWICH ORDNANCE DEPARTMENT. (Hansard, 28 February 1893) Foremen of the Ordnance Store Department at Woolwich are paid on a daily rate, which carries with it pay for overtime."

And East India Service is obvious now you point it out......

Thanks again
