Looking on FreeCEN for Margaret Campbell born 1839 I found records for the following family which seems to fit:

1841
Robert Campbell, M, 30, tailor
Janet F 30
Elizabeth F 12
John M 10
William N 8
Robert M 6
Ann F 4
Margaret F 2
All born Ayrshire

1851
Robert Campbell M M 45 Tailor Ayr
Janet Campbell M F 45 St Quivox Ayrshire
Elizabeth Speirs M F Handsewer & Annuitants wife 21 Stirling
John Campbell U M son 18 flesher Ayr
Robert Campbell M son 15 tailor Ayr
Margaret Campbell daur 11 scholar Rutherglenr
William Speirs M M vistr 18 Annuitant Rutherglen
Speirs M 7 vistr Annuitant Kilmarnock
Jessie F 1mo Annuitants daur Ayrshire.

There is a record on IGI - Elizabeth Campbell bap. Nov 1828 Gorbals Lanark married William Speirs 22 Dec 1850 Ayr.

So Robert (b. ca. 1806) probably married Janet (b. ca. 1806) somewhere around 1827.

Hi Simon, I looked at the '41/'51 census on Thursday and thought that was your family. Looks like the 1803 birth of Janet Patrick in St Quivox is correct. Patrick appears more often connected to Janet than Kilpatrick so I would be inclined to believe that was her surname.

William Patrick = Margaret Borland 14 Sept 1802, Ochiltree,Ayr.

This looks like a good Fit for Robert,

Robert Campbell b 30 Sept 1804, ch Oct 1804,Ayr, Ayr.
Father-John Campbell, Mother - Elizabeth Gowdie.

   Val.

Val - thanks very much for that. It does look as if Janet is a 'Patrick' who used 'Kilpatrick' on occasion - I wonder why?

In answer to your previous query (which I'm sorry I overlooked before) - yes, the OPR for the 1827 marriage of Robert Campbell and Janet Patrick describes him as 'Soldier, 42nd Regt. of Foot'.

This threw me a little as I thought that soldiers had to sign on for a long time (life?) at that period, and he is a tailor by the time of Margaret's christening in 1839.

I think I'll have to invest in some more credits on scotlandpeople and look at the christenings of the other children.

Thanks again, Simon.

Hello Simon,

It looks very likely that your Janet, died 1875. in Ayr, aged 70 years, under the names Janet Kilpatrick Campbell.

If you purchase this death it should clear up most of your questions, ie her parents names, her husband names, and his occupation.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks Jonn for finding that.

I've just had a look at the record on scotlandspeople. Her widowed husband Robert (tailor), registered her death and gave her parents names as William Kilpatrick (weaver) and Margaret Bowman (both dec.). Her given age is within a couple of years of that indicated by the birth record of Janet Patrick.

There is no marriage record on either scotlandspeople or IGI for William Kilpatrick/Margaret Bowman, but there is one for William Patrick/Margaret Borland which would fit with the other information I have.

Thanks again, Simon.
