Hi there,

This may sound a bit odd to start with, but bear with me...

Do you know the names of William Paton and Mary Young's respective parents?  Given the naming convention that first son named after paternal grandfather, second after maternal grandfather and third after the father - if 2 of these names were William, it could have been that there were indeed 2 sons called William.  It is not very common, but it is recorded to have happened on occasion.  I guess the trick now is to find them on the 1881 census, as they would both still be children at that time and expected to still be at home.

Let me know what you find out as you have got me curious now!  :)

Cheers,

This looks like them in 1881.

Source:   FHL Film 0224041     GRO Ref    Volume 792    EnumDist 11    Page 5
   Marr   Age   Sex   Birthplace
William PATON   M   37    M   Crailing, Roxburgh, Scotland

Mary PATON   M   31    F   Eckford, Roxburgh, Scotland

Isabella PATON       10    F   England

Mary A. PATON       1    F   Jedburgh, Roxburgh, Scotland

No sign of William of 1869. Maybe he died in England, where they were at the time of Isabella's birth.
