Hi
I couldn't find your Richard in the Woodstock regs but have found Susanna Osborn chr Jul 24 1782 d/o Richard and Tabitha.

Can confirm the burial of William Spurrier 16th Jan 1810 Hampton Gay (I have the regs).  States 85 and of Wooton.  Spells his name Spurret.

OFHS WOD01
The only entries for Spurrit or variants of that name in the Wooton regs themselves are:
30 Jan 1791 bur Benjamin Spurritt  pauper
1 Apr 1805 mar James Stansbridge b. (Steeple Aston) to Jane Spurritt sp witnesses Richard Spurrett and Mary Osborne.
Hampton Gay:
16 Jan 1810 bur Robert Spurret of the parish of Wooton age 85

Nothing in Cassington, Hampton Poyle, Wolvercote, Woodstock Union Chapel, Woodstock, Yarnton

OFHS WOD02
Nothing in Combe, Deddington, Duns Tew, Kiddington, North Aston, Over Worton, Rousham, Sandford St Martin, Steeple Barton, Tackley, Westcote Barton

OFHS WOD03
Nothing in Begbroke, Bladon, Glympton, Kidlington, Nether Worton, North Aston, Shipton on Cherwell, Stonesfield, Water Eaton

Steeple Aston
21 Jun 1730 Joyce d. William
22 Jan 1754 William & Elizabeth Spurrier, murdered

Please note I tended to concentrate my searches for pre 1800s.  From the above searches I would assume that the Spurretts came from a parish adjoining Woodstock parish.

Have got the following from Bampton regs for you but these are all later:
Baptisms:
Mary Ann Spurret 3 Apr 1825 d  Thomas and Rejoice labourer
Harriet Susanna 22 Feb 1829 d Thomas and Rejoice labourer
Richard Spurrett 22 Feb 1829 s Thomas and Rejoice labourer
Lucy Spurrett 16 Sept 1836 d Thomas and Rejoice labourer
Robert Spurrett 4 Oct 1837 s Thomas and Rejoice labourer
Joseph Henry Spurrett 8 Jan 1840 s Thomas and Rejoice Road Surveyor.
Sara Spurrett 17 Mar 1841 d Thomas and Joyce coal merchant
George Spurret 7 May 1843 s Thomas and Rejoice coal merchant
Walter Richard Spurret 14 Feb 1849 s Richard and Jane pensioner
Thomas Richard Spurrett 23 Nov 1851 s Richard & Emma labourer
Susan Jane Spurret 26 Dec 1852 d Richard & Jane labourer
Arthur George Spurret 2 Jul 1854 s Richard & Emma labourer
and many more

Marriages:
Richard Spurrett bach soldier mar 4 Dec 1847 Jane Spedwell spin, fathers Richard Spurrett labourer, John Bedwell beadle. Wits James Wells, Mary Ann Morse

21 Mar 1848 Ann Spurret mar Robert Stone, bach, mason fathers Thomas Spurrett coal merchant, William Stone mason

21 Apr 1851 Richard Spurrett bach, labourer mar Emma Cripps fathers Thomas Spurrett coal merchant, William Cripps labourer

31 Dec 1867 Robert Spurrett bach grocer mar Trecena Pinnock Beckinsale fathers Thomas Spurrett farmer, John Pinnock Beckinsale

There are quite a lot of Spurretts/Spurrits in the 19th century so I've stopped listing them!  If you need info relating to a particular Spurrett from this time in Bampton just let me know.  I'm just sorry I couldn't find anything for the earlier dates you were after.

Regards
Steph

Hi Steph,Thank you so much for your info,Have come across a few of them
in family search, still trying to work out where they all fit in to my tree. The
name Spirit as i know it has so many variations over the years like Spurrett,
Spurritt etc., and now Spurrier,it gets confusing.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Lynne

I'm afraid I don't have any more at the moment as I haven't been able to do much lately, but I will certainly let you know if I come across anything.

I wondered if you were interested in maps of Hexham?the one I have shows Gilesgate as it would have been then."HEXHAM1895"

You can get them on line at www. alangodfreymaps.co.uk, they are not expensive and I have found them quite interesting, and helpful

Hello Lynne,

I posted on this thread a year ago but I have only just noticed the activity from Aug 11.  I am a descendant from the Woodstock Spurretts and have a tree of the Spurretts covering about a thousand names.  I am very happy to compare notes.

By the way, you mentioned your great great Aunt who lives in America - is that Elizabeth who lived in Manchester Missouri and was researching the Spirits?

Hi Robert,
Great to hear from you, very happy to share any info i have, although havent
that much on the Woodstock/Stow-on-the Wold side of the family. But willing
to share anything i have with you.I think its funny that when Spurretts moved
to the North East the spelling of the name changed to Spirit and yours never
changed.
I think its the same Elizabeth,Quinn is her surname,i only got intouch with her 2years ago through a gentleman from New Zealand who had come across my
family tree(his family are the Tugbys,my g,g,g grandfather Stephen`s 2nd
wife was a Tugby)Elizabeth is 87yrs old now,ive wrote to her a couple of times, and funny enough before i read your email,id just recieved a one from
gentleman in New Zealand, who said Elizabeth was doing fine, and id decided to write to her in the New Year.

Hello Lynne,

Yes Elizabeth Quinn - how wonderful!!!  I would like to write to her as well as she spent some time communicating with my father who started me on this never-ending trail.  I need to check she is at the same address but rather than post somebody else's address on an open site, could you email me it at *  Also, whereabouts are you so we can figure out how to compare notes?

Rob

Hello I am Caroline Timms b. Bampton & read your thread with great interest as I am related to the spurretts. My great grandfather Henry Timms married Annie Elizabeth Spurrett( in 1892) daughter of Joseph Henry Spurrett & Caroline Luckett, grandaughter of Thomas Spurrett & Rejoice Orpwood. I would be grateful if anyone can help me as I am now stuck on Thomas, my 3x gt grandfather but my Orpwood line definately can be traced to Thomas Orpwood (1668).

Regards Caroline.
I am looking for anyone who can help me find  Tanners of Bampton Oxfordshire. Joseph Tanner B. 1808  & Martha Maria Simpson B.1811. Thanking you in advance
