Trojan manifest 1880
« on: Sunday 27 September 09 13:53 BST (UK) »
I am hoping to find the manifest for the Trojan, a Union Castle Line ship that sailed from Southampton to the Cape of Good Hope.  I am looking for a passenger, Margaret Thom or Margaret Park (she was recently widowed) who was traveling with her two young children, Bill and Jack, both under the age of five.

I know from the Maritime Museum in London that the Trojan sailed to South Africa three times that year, but I cannot find a passenger list.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A ship called Trojan (3652 tons), had the ID number 1082404 - Union SS Co the registered owner.

Launched 26/2/1880, completed 22/4/1880 (broken up Marseilles 1903)
Builder J&G Thomson, Clydebank

Passenger/Cargo
One screw (prop) driven by a two cylinder compound engine.

1880 too early for the manifests/passenger list to be on Find My Past.
The log may not exist, as only a fraction are held by TNA. There is another large chunk held in Canada, but between the two it does not cover all GB registered vessels.

The only other chance is to see if there is a Union SS Co archive (have no idea when Union joined with Castle).

Happy hunting

Hetherington (William - born England Aprox 1834 Salford, Cabinet Maker, died Dublin - Father also William born Ireland),
Wilson, Wright, Morely, Morris (Jewish blood and a name change in there somewhere, but who and when?)
James, Driscoll, Collins, Murphy (all end up in Ireland far too quickly)
Sewell (Bexley, Kent)
Harrison, Higginson, Mitchell - Sussex
Tench, Ireland
Hogg,

Try
http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/ucastle.html

It looks like it is Union Steamship Co not company, what ever you search you get a lot of other links that are not the operation of the Southampton to South Africa mail service.

A sister vessel the Tartar did the run Cape Town to Southampton via Maderia in 17 days. So it is credible that the Trojan could be completed in April of 1880 and then done three return journeys.

It is looking patchy on Union SS Co records though.

Hi Canuc,

Thanks for the info.  I was able to find the ship's log for 1880 in the Maritime museum so she definitely sailed three times that year to South Africa.

I guess my question is whether anyone knows of any other sources or manifests?  If not, then does anyone have any idea of where to look for immigration records for South Africa (or from Scotland/England)?

Thanks!

Hi there,
If you check genealogyworld.net you will find selected passenger lists for 1880. There is a Mrs Parks with 2 children listed on another sailing that year.
