William ASHELFORD - Transportation 1850
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 15:32 BST (UK) »
Hi

William b: 1818 hails from Halse/ Lydeard St Lawrence in Somerset and was sentenced to transportation for 10 years in 1850 for burglary - can any kind soul tell me if he arrived or where I can find any evidence to show he actually was transported?

I also believe that he and his brother Isaac b: 1818 may have had similar offences against them in 1831 with lesser sentences.

Thank you  :)

It seems by 1851 he had not gone yet:

It is quite likely he didn't go, as this was towards the end of the transportation system. I don't see him in Tasmania - transportation ended there in 1853 - or in the WA lists at www.convictcentral.com - or any mention in the Australian newspapers online.

Thank you Jorose, I suppose it's possible that he didn't go and maybe he died in prison!  Ten years is a long time.

I'll have another look in England, perhaps for a death.

Thank you for posting this, I was google searching the same query (William was my 3rd Great Grandfather) and I was trying to track him in the fleet too!

I don't come up with any information for 'Ashelford' anywhere in Australia so it is very likely he wasn't transported out here.

Hi Aylsa
I also had a look for Asheford, rather than Ashelford, but no luck either.  I found a William Ashford, born 1818, who has an assisted passage out to Queensland arriving 28 Dec 1966 on the Ocean Empress but that is as close as I could get.
