Who Can Identify Scottish cameo artists?
« on: Thursday 01 October 09 23:53 BST (UK) »
I have copies of four cameos of Picken family, 2 male, 2 female, possibly done in Edinburgh, perhaps circa 1800-1810. The copies are oval, approx 3" x 2". The artist may have included an "S" shaped twist of hair on the reverse. I'd like to know more about dates and artists, gailmail

I have an ancestor who was a painter of miniatures too.

I got a book from the local library (they had to order it in) called something like Dictionary of Miniature Painters, and I looked her up in there.
Also, as I found from that that she had a work in the V&A museum, I wrote to them, and they were very helpful with info. They have quite alot of miniatures in their collection, so their expertise may be of help to you if you were to cintact them.

Thank you so much to "lizdb" for your information. Using your excellent website link, I was able to find 4 miniaturists who worked in Edinburgh at about the relevant time: John Miers (c 1758-1821); Andrew Robertson (1777-1845); Christina (Saunders) Robertson (1796-1854); and Sir Wm Chas Ross RA (1794-1860). I'll do a little more digging on those possibles. Thank you so much, gailmail
