William Field

I am trying to trace my husband's ancestor, a William Field born in County Cork  about 1842/43.
His father was William Field, a blacksmith.
William had brothers John and Patrick Field who were godfathers to two of his children.
I have no idea whereabouts in Cork this family  originated.
William  married in the Bolton area of Lancashire in the 1870's.
If anyone could help to guide us further I would very much appreciate it.

This is a very long shot.  Goes back to 17th century.  William Field was a soldier in Cromwells army. Became mayor of Cork. married Susana Beecher.sister of  Col. Thomas Beecher, of Sherkin. Was my gt gfr x times.  Lorraine

The name usually written in Co. Cork as Field or Fielding, was usually  an anglicization of the Irish name variously spelt Fehilly, Fihily, Feeley, etc., and every parish priest used his favorite form of the name in the parish register.

Hi Jean Sandra,

My surname is 'Field' and I'm from Cork.  Before I started researching the family tree, I was always told the family was from the Inniscarra area of Cork.  (still don't know if that's true or not  )

From my research my ancestors all lived in Cork city... the furthest back I've got is a marriage in 1883, Cork city.  I'm still trying to trace where the family actually came from.

I don't have any Williams in my tree yet, but lots of John's, Eugene's and Jeremiah's, along with Eileen's/Eily's and of course Mary's.   

Don't know if this will help you or not, but the surname 'Field' is unusual in Cork to say the least.

Thank you for replying. I'm afraid I only know of a William, Patrick and John Field from Cork. I don't even know if it was the City or not.

I'm not sure if we have a connection or not, but you have a 'John Field' in your tree, so I'm intrigued because I have a couple of them in my tree also. 

Do you have dates on these 'John Field's'?

As I said before, the 'Field' name is unusual to say the least in Cork.  It's so unusual, I've been asked to spell my surname on more than one occasion!!

William Field is my Great Great Grandfather.
My Mum was a Field, we live in Manchester.
We have traced him as far back as you
Would love to know more. My Grandad was
called Vincent and was from Openshaw Manchester.

Dont know if this helps but in the Parish of Ightermurragh on Griffiths Valuations where the name William Field is very prominent in the Townland of Knockglass on the land of James Kenefick there is a Forge or Smithy.
