William Fisher Hobbs b 1845
« on: Saturday 03 October 09 22:17 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some advice on how I can proceed with my search for information about William Fisher Hobbs who was born in Woodmancote Gloucestershire England (1845) to Sarah Hobbs - 3 months before her marriage to William Fisher.

I don't know whether he retained his actual surname of Hobbs, or whether he was known as William Fisher.

The family story is that he went to Africa to work in a diamond mine and died there as a wealthy man.  The story continues that there was an ad in the British press for anyone with an interest in his estate to come forward but for some reason the family decided not to.  Perhaps he was "disowned" - that is the suggestion anyway.

Of course, even if this story is true, then it might not have been South Africa...

These are just a small sample of the documents in the S.A. Archives which may relate to your man.  I also searched on the other name, and came up with heaps.  You will need to go on and see if anything strikes a chord.  I you need the name of a Cape Town researcher,  let me know.

Cheers,

Tisy

I am posting again my 2009 query about William Fisher (see below) in the hope that a new forum member might now also be tracing the same family line.  (We can live in hope!)

As you can see, I had a reply from Tisy but especially given how vague my information was, there was nothing for sure to link this to my man.

Many thanks

As the death notices indexed on NAAIRS are now mostly accessible on the familysearch.org site see http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=742221.0 you could look at the individual death notices for William Fisher and William Hobbs between say 1860 and 1945 to see if there are any possible connections. Depending on who lodged the DN and their knowledge of the person it may have registered who the parents of the deceased were

I suggest you put up a new posting about your Hobbs family, giving your grandmother's full names, date of birth and another else that you know.

This will make it a lot easier for people to assist you.
