Tulloch Family, Polmont,Stirlingshire
« on: Sunday 04 October 09 14:19 BST (UK) »
I am certain that I have a distant connection to the Tripneys. Susan Alexander was married to my GGG Father, William Tulloch @ Muiravonside in 1792. They had 6 daughters and one son.  Susan's parents were John Alexander and Sarah Aitken. I have been unable to confirm William's parents  but have a feeling he was from North Ronaldsay. His father would be John & his Mother would be Christian using  the traditional naming regime. Using the IGI the only match I could find to fit for his approx age was John Tulloch & Christian in North Ronaldsay,(William was baptised in Sanday the adjacent Island.) If anyone has any info which could confirm this I would be delighted.  I could never find any other Tullochs in East Stirlingshire around this time.

Hi , Hibee,    I have been aware of this site for some time, what I am trying to establish if my William Tulloch did come from the Orkneys. I have used the traditional naming of family to assume that his father was John and mother Christian, William's only son was John and his second born Daughter was Christian.  I am trying to find some mention of William in any local records in the Polmont area (Bennetstown) where he lived and raised his family.  I have not been able to trace any other Tulloch's before or after.  He married in 1792.

The Tripney name was on one of the other forums where it was mentioned one of his forebears married a daughter of William Tulloch and Susan Alexander who were my GGGGParents.

Regards Bob

Hello Bob,

You have just come to a great site everyone here is so helpful.

It looks as though you are related to my husband as William and Susan are his GGGGG Grandparents

Sadly I have only got back as far as William Tulloch and Susan Alexander on my tree but did wonder if John Tulloch and Christian were Williams parents.

Hi Bob,

I have just remembered what our distant connection to the Tripneys is.

It comes through William and Susans daughter Agnes Tulloch born 1796-1887 line. Agnes married Alexander Gibb. One of Agnes descendants is also a member here and I have had contact with him when I was doing the family tree.

Hi,

John Tulloch
Birth:  13 Sep 1807 - Stirlingshire, Scotland
Death:  10 Apr 1882

I know he married twice, and had children by both wives. Does anyone know anything more about this man besides what is on the census records of 1851/61/71/81 ?

Cheers

Hi,

there is a possibility it's the most significant survivor of the 'Grace Darling' wreck, the Forfarshire, as per here:

http://www.gracedarling.co.uk/Survivors.html

I'd love to know anything you have on him!

Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe,

Welcome to Rootschat.

There are a couple of John Tullochs born in Stirlingshire in 1807. One being born September 1807 in Stirling, Parents are Duncan Stewart and Katharine Paton. The other being born January/February 1807 in Killearn, Parents are Duncan Stewart and Jean Hutton.

The most likely candidate I've found is:

John Tulloch*
Birth 22 MAR 1808 in Boness, Linlithgowsh
Death 10 APR 1882 in Loues Square Calderbank Eastern Monklands

Son of William Tulloch and Susan Alexander

First wife Naomi Muir (1808 – 1841), by whom has children William(1833-?), John (1835 – 1901), Archibald (1836-?) &  James (1841 – 1889)

Second wife Barbara Addison (1819 – 1883), children Anne (1851)

Reason being this man is listed variously as a ships carpenter and boat-builder in the censuses.

The man above is of about the right age, the right name, and the right profession, in about the right area.... but it doesn't prove its the same person.

Against that, there's a single reference in the Newcastle Guardian and Tyne Mercury, 28 July 1849, to the sudden death of a John Tulloch on a ship. I know nothing else about this person, but it's a salutary reminder that, just because everything else fits, it doesn't mean the first person is the right one.
