Hamilton McCallion Marriage in Tyrone
« on: Friday 16 October 09 09:10 BST (UK) »
Looking for info re Samuel HAMILTON, Ballygawley and Moyont McCALLION, Errigal Keerogue, to determine if they are MY family.

IHFH shows 11 Apr 1860 marriage in Aughnacloy Pres Church, Parish Carnteel, David HAMILTON, labourer and James McCALLION, labourer, as fathers. I have a John HAMILTON, born Ballygawley c1837, father: David, farmer so Samuel MIGHT be John's brother, it is a recurring name.

Unfamiliar with McCALLION and "Moyont". Wonder if anglicizes to Mary? The record is a transcript so can't see writing. Also unfamiliar with Carntreel.

Samuel's occupation indicates "Jew Muslin Agent"? In later generations, there are ties to the linen industry as foremen/managers.

Also found possible brothers: George, Thomas and Davids from Griffiiths Valuations and Civil Registration in general vicinity/timeframe. Don't have enough information to tie them in, would welcome any suggestions.

Very interested in 1901 Census, when available....

I would appreciate any insight or suggestions...

Think you might have a very bad transcription- according to IGI (www.familysearch.org)-
Samuel Hamilton and Margaret McCallion had-
Margaret born 17 Apr.1864 Ballygawley district, Tyrone (page 156 in civil index)
William John born 20 Feb.1866 Ballygawley district (page 149 in civil index)
Would also query wording of occupation "Jew Muslin Agent."
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I have a "sewed muslin agent" in my tree - could be what they mean.

Thank you Aghadowey and Akanex2 for such quick replies.

I strongly suspect Samuel is part of my family. Does anyone have access to the Ballygawley or Canteel 1901 census or other records, or seen them available anywhere?

Akanex, a sewed muslin agent sounds more like it, although not sure exactly what that would be.

I appreciate any help or suggestions...

Have been able to confirm that Samuel is part of my family. He emigrated to Australia and is one of five siblings that did so. My great great grandfather, John HAMILTON remained in Ireland, Co Tyrone, then Co Armagh. Have been able to fill in quite a few holes by researching Australian newspapers and making contact with distant relatives along the way.
