Thanks for the reply

No - no connection to Nottingham yet proven ( much to my husbands disappointment - I understand there is a Hardy interest in a Nottingham real ale brewery). My research for the birth of my maternal grt grandfather was clutching at straws - my mother having a vague idea that her grandfather may have come from Nottingham - based on some information that a grt uncle was the chief engineer at the water works there.

Can't find said grt grandfather (Alfred Ernest) in 1881 census or even in 1891 when he had a family. On 1901 his birth place was given as London - but as yet no joy. He was probably born  between 1859 and 1861.

Hi again

I have just had a good look on the 1891 Census to try and locate your Alfred Ernest etc  - but without any luck I am afraid.

Is there any other info you could supply on the Hardys to try and locate them

Chris in 1066Land

I was born and bred in Nottinghamshire - next village to Sutton Bonington.

Thank you for looking. Someone else has also looked in the census for West Ham and Limehouse with no luck.

The only info I have on Alfred Ernest is what he supplied on his marriage certificate and that given on his death certificate and the 1901 census.

Marriage - 19th Oct 1884 Trinity Church Parish of St Mary Newington Surrey.
Alfred Ernest Hardy  aged 25 a millwright batchelor father William Hardy Deceased.
Address Bath Terrace

Emma Jane Mundy aged 24 spinster
father Wlliam Mundy Gardener
same address

I know that she was born in Ramsgate Kent in 1856 and have found most of her family in various census.

Alfred died in 1938 in East Ham and his age on the death certificate was given as 81

On the 1901 census his birth place was given as London and his age as 40.

All other info is based upon family stories but no firm detail - just faded memories but anyone who knew him is well in their 80's - so shouldn't expect too much. After all I never asked my grandfather where he was born!

Being in the next village must help in your research.

Hi,

Just read about your Alfred Hardy,  I haven't got any information to help you, but my father's line is Hardy and he was born in Nottingham, Arnold, and thought his Hardy family were born there too, but just by chance I found out that they were from Shipley, in Derbyshire.  Alfred could have been born in London because his mother came from there - in those days they often went back home to have their first child, or more, depending on the circumstances.
I have also found that often the place on some of the censuses is wrong, I have someone in my line who is written as being born in a completely different place than the previous census.  Also when the people have transcribed it they have often made mistakes so it is better to look at the original census paper.  In one census the place name had been mistakenly written for the previous person.  In another census for example my gr.gr.gr grandfather wasn't there, but I found him on the original paper by chance looking for one of his children who was living on the same road.  He also could have been written down as Harding etc by mistake.  I spent ages searching for someone whose name had been mispelt and only found out when I mentioned it to someone on that particular line and they said it was a mistake and gave the right name.  Trying looking for him with a star with only three letters or with the London or in Derbyshire just in case.  Good luck
Jane

My ancestor, Sampson HARDY, was born in Sutton Bonington.  I found his widow, working as housekeeper for Munday / Mundy family, in Liverpool, I think.  Do not have all details with me here at library.  Would like to compare notes.  Will have time to read more of your postings next time I am here to use computer.  This is my first time using RootsChat.
