Latin translation please

On the burial entry I have just found it has this latin written underneath it

OXCISUS  ERAT  A  MATRE

Can anyone tell me what this means.

Erat = he/she/it was
a matre = from (his/her) mother
oxcisus = ?   It is in the masculine singular form but I've never heard of the word.

Is this from a gravestone?  Taken from his/her mother (in a particular way)?  Could it be excisus?

I don't think it is Excisus.  Enter it in Google (which doesn't know Oxcisus !) and you get loads of references to millipedes and plants !

Hi all,

             After a little more digging about this family I have found out that the child, Thomas, was chr 12 Feb 1837/8  parents John + Ann Smith.

He was buried 15 Mar 1638  Thomas sayd son of John Smith oxcisus erat a matre

Delving a bit further in the parish records I found this.

9 Jul 1638 Ann w of John Smith of Stanton who first unnaturally killed her first child and having not ye fear of God before her eyes hanged herself in a chamber with a slipping of yarn.

Could the latin refer to his mother killing him?

In "good" latin, it should read occisus , and the sentence means much as you guessed:  "He was killed by his mother".

Thanks Manchester Rambler this was from a transcribed copy of the parish records so your word is probably right. Thanks Mrs Hill for teaching MR so well.


What a sad story for my tree. I still can't find out what happened to John Smith. Will have to go digging a bit more.
