« on: Tuesday 08 March 05 14:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have been going through some old notes I made of info from my dad about his G.grandfather David McKnight b abt 1820 .
David was a farmer before his death which accrued before 1869
and I have found a reference to Baleek Co Armagh now I don't know if this refers to a farm or a place so I am clutching at straws hear any one recognize this place David Was the father of William McKnight b 1844 Belfast

Audrey,

A Google for "Baleek" finds interesting information about Baleek/Belleek in Co Armagh at:
http://www.from-ireland.net/lewis/arm/baleek.htm

If you search for Belleek on Multimap at:
http://www.multimap.com/
you will get two hits.  Go to the one in Newry & Mourne and you will find it exactly as described in the previous reference.

If you go to Irish Ancestors at:
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/index.cfm
you can do a free name search for McKnight.  There is information about the origin of the name, and there are many hits in the Griffith Valuations (if you need further information about the GV, I suggest that you Google).   Further details about the hits on Irish Ancestors can be obtained for a fee.

A word of warning - research in Ireland can be quite difficult.
You might wish to look at the following site:

Re a comment in one of your similar posts on other RootsChat boards, there is no reason why a person would not be named David in Ireland - especially, perhaps, in a Protestant household.  I have several persons named David in my records from Co Donegal.

I hope this helps,

Judy
