Cull family Kilsyth and Canada
« on: Sunday 18 October 09 16:43 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on the following Cull family members. I have David Cull who was born around 1892. He worked as a general labourer. He married Elizabeth Wilson Cull who was born around 1892. I'm not sure if they were both born in Kilsyth as I can find no trace of them on the SP website.
But they did have two children who were later born in Kilsyth.
William Cull born 1911 Kilsyth was the son of David and Elizabeth.
David Cull born 1912 Kilsyth was the son of David and Elizabeth. David b1912 married Cecilia Bow in Kilsyth on 12th June 1936. He resided at Manse Road in Kilsyth when he got married in 1936. He possibly emigrated to Canada.
David and Cecilia had two girls born in 1937 and 1945 and it's believed they went to stay in Canada too.
I'm posting this on the Canada list too incase anyone knows of them having emigrated to Canada.

Hi,
I'm not sure whether this is David Cull Snr.

The Scottish naming pattern works for David and Elizabeth's children, ie, 1st born named after father's father and 2nd born named after father.

FYI Milton is not too far from Kilsyth, depending on location within the parishes, could be about 10 miles)

1901 census (Glasgow St George; ED14; Page 6)

20 Burnside St, Glasgow St George, Lanarkshire

William Cull    46 head  van driver born Ireland (Co Down?)
Eliza Cull    39 wife Ireland (Co Down?)
John Cull    7
Maggie Cull    14
David Cull    12 scholar (c1889)
William Cull    8
Bella Cull    5
Robert Cull    3
Nellie Cull    11 months

All children born Glasgow
Margaret Leggat    70

From SP .....

1888 David Cull  MILTON   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK
GROS 644/08 1254

Hope this is your man and that the info helps.

If the family from the 1901 census is correct, likely marriage for William and Eliza is, from SP...

Yes...Most of family came to Canada..David Jr., William, Annie, Margaret and Robert; though all but 2 of David and Lizzie's grandchildren were born in Scotland. David Jr. and Cilia (as we called her) were my aunt and uncle.

Was this Elizabeth, maiden surname Cull, middle name Wilson, or Elizabeth, maiden surname Wilson?

Strange, because the SP index has a marriage of David Cull to Elizabeth Wilson in Kilsyth in 1910 (which answers my previous question. She was Elizabeth Wilson or Cull).
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Elizabeth's maiden name was Wilson.  My living relatives are sure that David originally came from Ireland.
