Franco Portrait Studio
« on: Tuesday 20 October 09 15:45 BST (UK) »
To my joy, i have just discovered a lovely old photo of a male relative on My Da's side.. All i have to do now is identify him!

The photo is a typical postcard style, and the Studio Details are as follows:
Franco Portrait Studios
15 Lr O'Connell St & 6 Nth Earl St. Dublin.

Can i assume that its post 1922 because of the O'Connell St part ?  When did this studio cease to do photography?

As far as I know the street was renamed in 1924.

there's a previous thread which mentions some details of the studio :

I'll have a look in Thom's '38 this evening and see if they are still there at that stage.

from Thom's 1938

5 North Earl St, Burtol Irish Cleaner ltd

14/15 Lr O'Connell St, H. Cowan Photographer
also James McCann Fruitier/confectioner, American Restaurant & Tea Rooms, Flynn hairdresser, Urney chocolates, O'Doherty & Co. auditors/accountants, American travel agent, Irish Telephone Co.,

so it appears that the Franco Portrait Studio was gone by then... which would place the date of your photo sometime between 1924 and 1938

As a matter of interest I also have a 'Franco' photograph wallet where the address(es) are shown as 15 Lr O'Connell Street & 6 North Earl Street. There is a calender on the rear cover with the date of 1930.

Interestingly, the photograph inside (of my late uncle) refers to T Graves & Co, Jewellers and Photographers of 36 Henry Street. Was there a connection between Franco & Graves? Or did Graves purchase Franco's wallets?

Hi, I also have a photo of a female relative? from Franco Portrait Studios in Lr O'Connell St (it looks like 1920s). I believe the studio was originally owned by Simon Cowan so the H. Cowan may be a relative. Any thoughts as I would like to identify this person if there are any records of clients.

I have an unidentified photo from the late 1800s(?), on the back of which it says:

The Franco Portrait Studios
15 Lr. Sackville Street.  6 Nth Earl Street.
111 Grafton Street, 46 Harrington Street
85 Talbot Street. 39 Mary Street.
Dublin

I guess it's too much to hope that there is a master list of clients somewhere:-)

I suspect the picture, which shows a woman in distinctive "Celtic revival" costume, is a Carroll from Clonee.

I am wondering about the year that this was taken ... certainly has an old appearance, but the first listing I have for the Photographers is at the Grafton street address in 1914. At that stage they were known as the 'Franco-British Art Studio'.. but nothing at the other addresses in 1914 or any listings earlier years. Sometime after that the company name change slightly, and in a reference I have in 1930 the Earl St address is mentioned as 'Franco Art Co, photographers.'

I'll have a look through my notes on Dublin photographers and see if I can establish any more detail on the company..

due to 1914 listing, and the use of the name 'Sackville Street' (rather than O'Connell St)... my guess is that the photo can be dated sometime between 1914 and 1924.

I love when RootsChat is the first result in a google search
I also have a photo from the Franco Portrait Studios, with these streets listed.
No idea who the infant is.
