Find location of photo

I think I can narrow it down to Lancashire - probably the Southport or Accrington area. Can anyone help please?
Dating it would be an added bonus!
Thanks
Geoff

Geoff

If it weren't for the small boy on the front row, I would suggest that this was a workplace photo.  The dress is quite formal.

Can anyone read the small plate to the right of the door?  I can't, but it could help.

I have a photo of my grandmother taken about 1908 wearing a similar outfit and jewellery to one of the ladies in black.

I wonder why the men on the back row are wearing buttonholes?

Most of the people, apart from the patriarch and that rather grumpy looking chap front left, are quite young, in their twenties, possibly.  Could it be some kind of a training school, perhaps?

There is a Sunnyside House in Accrington, apparently on Manchester Road.

Hello Geoff,

Apparently the Mayor of Accrington lived at Sunnyside House.  This link is a bit long, but if you Edit-Find, you can find him - his name was Thomas Whittaker -  http://www.rootschat.com/links/07bh/

Then if you look at this link, you can see Thomas Whittaker was the Mayor of Accrington between 1890-93 - so he may be found on the 1891 census...

Might give you a few more leads.....

I thought it looked like a seaside boarding house, although there are a lot of people there! If the Mayor lived there it could well have been a sort of open day for a charity fund-raising event. Viktoria.

Thanks to you all for your help - I too would date the photo early 1900s as I have other photos from the same source which are all 1900 - 1920.

For the first 30 years of my life I lived in Accrington just off Manchester Road - no.15 would be near the bottom of the road towards the town centre - the fire station and police station were built in 1936 - I wonder if it was in that area pre-1936.

I wll try the 1891 census as suggested.

Thanks
Geoff

Hi all
Just an observation - If you look closely at the picture you can see quite a lot of "touching" - for instance the men in the back row have their hands on the shoulders of the men and women in the row in front of them. Also with the couple standing far right in the second row from back the man has his arm around the female.

The point Im making is that this must be a family gathering as Im sure if it were a work group for instance there wouldnt be that amount of familiarity.

Please don't use my restores without my permission - thankyou. 😎

HI Geoff

We lived in southport for fifty years, and this photo shouts southport to me but I cant offer any proof. To me it may be a convalescent home of some sort
Southport was full of them, the gents on the back row have their hand on the shoulder of their offspring mostly I think.Accrington to Southport by rail was an easy journey then. there were lots of sunny this and sunshine that, as befits a seaside town, also a sunshine home for the blind.

regards mazi's OH
