I have x2 Ryans listed for the GPR at Arnhem...

2589852 Ryan RW

4696494 Ryan D...

Neither were KIA though...The first one was captured, and the second was RTU'd via Nijmegen

Hi Ryan, :)
I said it was far fetched ,but stranger things have happened ! ;D
Do you have a date on the letter or where it was posted from or any other clues that may be on the letter that could help?
Also you say he was born Waterford  have you any idea of his age?
                                                                                              Regards Rog.
Ps If he was RWK in 5th Div not Btn he could have been at Kohima I think Maybe one of the experts can confirm What  " 5T" before RWK.      (If it was mounted I would have thought T was for Troop but I dont think any of the West Kents were mounted.)
                                                                          Rog

Hey,

I have emailed my dad and asked him a ton of questions and also about the content of the letter so I should get a reply tommorow as they are in Australia.

I think Michael was mid to late twenties in 1942 so he was born around 1914 - 1919 (roughly)

I just want to thank everyone for all there help.

I'll post any new info as I get it

Cheers

Ryan

Reply from oppo at RWK museum....

There were 2 Ryan killed and 1 Ryman in the Regt 1939-45.

It's one of our service numbers thats for sure! But it doesn't match the name! His company commander was Capt Balleine. The bn lost a lot of men in Sept and by 23rd it was seriously under strength.

He is still looking...

Hey Scrimnet,

So does that mean that his service number matches up with that of someone that died in battle but the name (Michael Ryan) doesn't match?

Which service number was it that matched? Was it the one on the letter (6350509) or the one I was given by the AA-Duxford (as after he transferred there are no records of him completing the training course, the only MJ Ryan that did had a different service number 6335683 and he suggested that maybe they were the same person and the number is a transcription error or something) I hope I havent confused you.

I have a transfer report from the Army Air Corps saying he transferred from the RWK to the AAC but unfortunately it doesn't have a date. However I'd assume it was after 1942 (when he wrote the letter to my father) as he used his 5.T.R.W.K reg at the top of that letter.

I'm in the process of filling out the MoD request form so hopefully this will unravel the mystery a little more.

Thanks heaps for your help

Ryan

Am i right in saying that Numbers 6334001 to 639000 were alloted to RWK,prior and during WW2?.
(Taken from my mates filing system that are recorded on old fag packets and enverlopes)

If so,both Pte Ryan's numbers are in this group,

Briant
Richardson    Westmorland & Cumberland
Hall,               Westmorland & Aussie
Titterington    Westmorland & Cumberland(Dalton Gamekeepers)
