Donald SUTHERLAND (c1825)
« on: Friday 23 October 09 10:08 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I'm trying to trace a Donald SUTHERLAND, born c1825 in Wick.  He was a cooper.  Listed on the 1851 census at Shore Lane, Wick with his wife Helen, daughter Isabella (age 4) and brother-in-law John SINCLAIR (Helen's brother).  Donald and Helen married 15 Apr 1846 in Wick.

After this I am unable to trace Donald on census records or death records.  Helen and Isabella are also not on the 1861 census, but Isabella marries in Glasgow in 1864, and her mother is living with Isabella, her husband and children on both the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

Donald is not listed as deceased on Isabella's marriage record (I am aware this may be a clerical error).

On both the 1871 and 1881 census records Helen is shown as widowed, but on her death certificate she is shown as 'married to Donald SUTHERLAND', not 'widow of Donald SUTHERLAND' (again maybe a clerical error).

Isabella and her husband adopted the standard Scottish naming convention for their children and used three of the four grandparents name, but not Donald's.

There do not appear to birth records for Donald or Isabella.

Donald SUTHERLAND is my great-great-great-grandfather, so I am keen to find out what became of him.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Jonathan

Idid a search between 1800-1840 for births and only one came up for Helen Sinclair b 27/02/1826 in Canisbay,Caithness c 18/03/1826 Canisbay and her parents were James Sinclair and Jane Kennedy. Then put Donald Sutherland and Helen Sinclair as parents and came up with 4 children
Daniel Sutherland b 1847 Wick
Janet Sutherland  b 1849 Wick
Elizabeth Sutherland b 1853 Wick
Daniel Sutherland b 1855 Wick
The first Daniel must have died but no Isabella.

Thanks for that.  My Helen SINCLAIR was born 1812 in South Leith (sorry, I should have put that in my original post).  Her father was in the Merchant Navy.

Best wishes
Jonathan
