1861 census lookup please
« on: Friday 23 October 09 18:17 BST (UK) »
I have come to a dead end looking for John Bailey born c1838 Ellesmere, on any of the census pre 1871, there appears no trace of him or his family.  I have found him on the census from 1871 onwards but nothing before ! I assume he would be in the Ellesmere area of the county. From the IGI I have a John born to Charles/Elizabeth who could be the parents.  I may have just overlooked the family but any help would be great.

Can we please have full details of the family at that time as I cannot find a John Bailey b 1836-1840 Ellesmere in 1871

There is an entry in 1881 - wife Julia but the birthplace for that entry in 1871 is Hordley

Hi, thanks for replying, on the 71 census he is with wife Julia and children Edward 2 and William 6 mths, all at Colemere, Ellesmere. It gives his pob as Hordley, In 1861 he should be about 23 so he may not be with his parents, in 1841 he would be about 2/3 years old, hope this helps.

Hi,

Could this be John?

John BAILEY

Father:  Charles BAILEY
Mother:  Elizabeth

1841  HO107/918/9  f.7  p.10  Hordley, Shropshire  (Registration district: Ellesmere)

BAYLEY
Charles      40    Ag Lab
Elizabeth    35
Mary         10
John           2
Thomas       5months     All born on county.

1851  HO107/1994  f.505  p.32  Standwardine in The Wood, Shropshire (Registration district: Ellesmere)

John BAYLEY    Servant    12    Groom    Salop Hordley

Living in the household of George BELLISS, Farmer.

John BAYLEY    Servt    Un    23    Ag Lab    Salop Ellesmere

I think getting John's marriage cert. would help to confirm or disprove it,

John BAILEY    Dec Q 1866    Ellesmere    6a  1359
Julia BIRCH with same details.

Regards
Daisy

Hi Daisey,  thanks for your help, the different spelling fooled me for a while and yes I think the marriage cert is needed to be sure.
