Elliott family in Ireland
« on: Tuesday 27 October 09 02:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am tracing my family roots and am looking for any information on my great great grandfather.

From the 1891 Ontario Canada Census here's his confirmed information:

Alexander Elliott  Born in Ireland on Feb 4 1852
He died on Dec 14 1918

His wife was born Samantha Baker (in Ontario Canada)

Any information on him would be greatly appreciated ..or any info on how to search Irish birth/census records.

Thanks and have a great day ...Rob Stevenson

Full civil registration started here in Ireland in 1864, so too late to include anything on Alexander. For earlier parish records you will need to know his religion and the parish (or townland) he was born in.

The oldest surviving complete Irish census is 1901.

Elliot does not seem to be a very common name so it may be worth checking where the surname is present in Ireland on Griffiths Valuation - which was carried out in the 1850s/1860s.

see : http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

see also notes about the Valuation here  : http://www.rootschat.com/links/07d2/

Do you know anything about Alexander's father ? (name or occupation)

The IT surnames distribution site shows them concentrated around Fermanagh & Donegal:

Do Ontario death certificates for that period (and marriage certificates as well) not list parents?

Hello Shane

Thank you for the quick reply and information.

The information on Alexander Elliott from the 1891 Canadian census has his religion listed as Church Of England ..and Birthplace is listed as Ireland.  His occupation is listed as a Potter

I have yet to find his parents info.  This would be on his birth certificate/record ..and I have yet to find his marriage record ..although I believe he was married in Ontario Canada as his wife Samantha was born in Ontario.

Have a great day and thanks again ..Rob

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Alexander Elliott. Does death certificate give no clues?
Although Alexander was listed as Church of England in Canada his family might not have belonged to Church of Ireland in this country.

I have not been able to view the death certificate on microfilm yet ..but have ordered it to be sent to my public library.

As for his marriage certificate I am hunting this one down too

thanks for your reply ..Rob

Hello

I have checked the death records for Alexander Elliott

He died on December 13th 1918.  His wife was listed as Samantha.  His parents were not listed and it says his birthplace was Ireland.  However, the records state he was age 71 when he died, so this would put his birthdate around 1847 and not the Feb 4 1852 date that was on the 1901 Canadian Census.

I found him and his family In the 1881 Canadian Census and Alexander is listed as being age 36.  The family name is listed as Eliott.  I have been unable to find him in the 1871 Census ..but do know that his son Emerson was born in 1875 in Aultsville Ontario Canada.
