Condition Ref Marriage? (Sorted, Thanks)
« on: Thursday 29 October 09 18:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm unable to crop out the bit I'd like ye to see, so here's a direct link ~ which I hope will work? ~ to the 1861 Census. Hampshire > Portsea > Kingston > District 15 > Page 15:

Clicky.

I'm having absolute murder with William Curtis, five up from the bottom. And his 'House Keeper', Emma. A fine start would be knowing if either are shown as married. I just can't work that out from what I'm seeing here  ???

Many thanks if anyone can decipher it.

Hi Steve,

I think William is unmarried and the housekeeper married.

Exactly! My eyes were telling me she's married. My mind just couldn't hack it!

A twenty one year old, married woman, living as a twenty three year old Hawkers 'House Keeper'?! Come on ....! How did he tell the Enumerator that one and still look him in the eye?  ::)

 I can't figure it out.

Horrible thing is; It's Not looking impossible that there were even Two 'William Curtis, Fish Hawkers' in Portsea at that time. And barely a year between them!

Worse? I've just bought a raft of Cert's and now realise I missed out what could prove the crucial MC  :(

Back to GRO in a minute.

Thanks for confirming my worst fears, peeps  :-\
