William Crompton, died 1947 British Columbia
« on: Sunday 08 November 09 00:15 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find any information regarding William Crompton, born September, 19th, 1881, in Manchester. He emigrated to Canada (maybe 1903) and ended up in Quilchena outside Merritt, British Columbia. He died there May 27th 1947 and was then married to a Anna Chatt (I don't know anything about her).

I mainly want to know if he had any children.

Do you have a copy of William's BC death registration?  I see from your other post on the Lancs board that you have his date of birth from a death registration.  The privacy laws in Canadian provinces limit the availability of birth records so it is very difficult to track children during this time period.  The main source of information is the death registration where you hope one of his children acted as the informant.  Obituaries were not common in the 1940s especially in small towns like Merritt.

As for Anna, there is only one possibility in the BC Vital Events death index (died Vancouver 1986) but she would have been much younger than William - b. 1915.  A daughter perhaps??

Do you have William's occupation?  There is a possible match in the 1911 Census in Fernie, BC:

Can you post all you have on William and your sources?  It will make it easier to suggest further avenues if we know what you've already researched.

Regards,
Lynwen

ps.  if you don't have the registration, I'll look it up for you.

Check out the following website;

www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/index.htm click on to  Textural Records Index enter William Crompton in advanced search. There is a copy of a will under Probate/Estate files BC Supreme Court Merritt SC 19/1947.

The usual cost is around $30.00 Canadian. There is a email address posted on the site.

You may find any surviving children included in the will if he had any.

I have received a couple of wills through the above BC Archives hope this is of some help to you.

Hello Simon_HBG,
While I can't say I have specific information regarding William and Anna's offspring, I'm curious what you have found since posting this message.  Anna Chatt is my first cousin once removed.  Her mother Katie was my mother's aunt.  I'd like to know how you know she died in 1957 and what other details you may have gleaned.  According to the local history for Quilchena, William Crompton was in the fur business.  While he's buried in Merritt, Anna is apparently not, at least under that name.  Anyway, I'd like to know more.
I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.  I tried to find a way to message you directly from your profile but was unable to figure it out.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Cheers,
Dan Brown

Hi Dan, and welcome.

It appears that the original poster has not been on since 2011, so you may not get a response.

However, this is possibly the death registration for Anna:

Barb,
Thank you very much for this certificate! This is, indeed, Anna Chatt. Her mother, Katie, died when she was two, and she really managed to find a way to obtain adventure in the world.  I've been reading a little about William and silver fox farming and buying mink pelts, so it must have seemed a real pioneering life for her out there in British Columbia.  Perhaps someday I'll have the chance to visit New Westminster and get a look at her headstone at St. Peter's.
Thanks again!

Hi Dan,

Hope you are still checking this board.

Look at the caption under the photo!

They probably have lots more info on the Comptons' if he was that successful.
