Carlisle Archives Office
« on: Monday 09 November 09 17:45 GMT (UK) »
For everybody who may be thinking of visiting or phoning Carlisle Archive Office but lives away, there was an article in the paper on Friday (cumberland-news.co.uk) that the office will be closed on Fridays for the foreseeable future due to getting ready to move to more accessible location. Just to save you a wasted journey.

I was to have called them a couple of weeks ago, and found out that all records are being collated into one building somewhere handy, rather than having several places....
Sounds a good idea, but, as in this present world, I think progress is actually retro-progressive in reality....

No. Where they are moving to is easily accesible - with parking and will be fully sorted as to preservation etc. The castle was lovely to visit but then they stopped us parking there ( why I'm not sure as there was always parking and I would have happily payed) so you had to park and walk etc.
I assume there will be better phone and email/computer access for people away so all in all I think we might be going proto-progressive!

Hi :)

Hi - Continuing from above -

And where they are now is lovely to visit and very friendly, but not only involves a walk but a considerable climb,  which a huge number of people are not up to even if they do not have blue badges.   :'(  :'(  :'(

It starts either on a car park lower down or going even lower down under a deep underpass and starting the climb from that level!  : ::)

In adition, like Bob says, all the records will be on one site and in a much better atmosphere for them. ;D  ;D  ;D

Happy New Year! :)

Zounds, this sounds like the beginning of the Scottish Highlands, is there no respite for my poor aching limbs, and will telephone charges increase due to the uphill struggles of the call....lol
Maybe some more work for forklift man coming up...

A new message in the paper on friday last week (I've been to the chateau).
Archives will close in the castle on 29th April until Jan 2011 when it opens at Lady Gillford. Alternative locations are provided at Carlisle library, some at Whitehaven  and bishops transcripts at Kendal. The research service will be available in Whitehaven, Barrrow and Kendal.
