placename in Aberdeenshire
« on: Thursday 12 November 09 11:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, can anyone decipher/recognise the name of this place in Aberdeenshire, probably in the parish of Monquhitter, but I'm not sure about that! I thought it looked like Hettie or something, but can't find anything like it.

Hi rdarby

The word looks like "Keltie" to me - but I only know of Kelty in Fife, and Keltie Bridge in Callander Parish, (was Perthshire now in Sterlingshire, I believe)  Does the context of the text make it clear this place is in Aberdeenshire?

Any chance of more of the document to compare capital H  or K or R elsewhere?

 Cheers

The word looks like Rettie to me, but I don't know whether that is an area in Aberdeenshire. I tried a google search and there seem to be a lot of people called Rettie in the area, but I only came individual properties called Rettie - not an area.

Maybe you could look for another capital R is that document too? :)

I have rescanned and resized the document, so here goes! Note another place named - Sealscrook - I assume is nearby.

Hi rdarby,

Looks like Rettie to me too.

The man was asked where tha cattle came from so could well be a person rather than a place as Karen suggested.

The man mensions his Master also so it could be him.

Hope this helps,

Matt.

After reading the whole thing - I agree, Rettie is more likely  Crofter's  name or a Croft name rather than a 'town'.  Also agree it's ettie at least (the double 't' in 'cattle' above is the same) - but my  jury was out on whether it was a K or a R, but I agree probably R, now!

I see from 1841, George Duiguid, Crofter, of the right sort of age - is enumerated in Village of Cummestown, Monquhitter.

A number of RETTIE's in Monquhitter 1841. I see a couple who, by occupation could be possible:  John RETTIE  a Farm overseer at Hairmoss ;  Or there is Adam RETTIE an AG Lab also in Cummestown....?

Reference here (1700's)  to 'Sealscroak' Farm, abt half a mile from Monquhitter
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/r/e/Nedra-A-Creamerinnerarity/FILE/0025text.txt

But here it I think it's the same  place referred to as 'Sealscrook' an address in 1700's Cuminestown Monquhitter which still exists  to this day (2002) in this link:

Hairmoss is in  Parish of Monquitter near Turriff

Thanks to you all, I'll take it as "Rettie". These old documents are fascinating, even if I do have to stop and look up all the old place names, its a learnng curve!
Only another 100 pages or so to go..
having fun, Roger

Further to the above, I have found on an old map tha was associated with the above document, a place called Reattie, not far from Banff, but I can't see it on the OS maps.
Maybe a farm, or the name has changed..
