Alice Glover to New Zealand 1865

Hi All,

I am trying to find where Alice Glover came from in Ireland,she arrived in Auckland, New Zealand February 1865 on the clipper ship 'Ganges' on a voyage from Queenstown, Co. Cork, Ireland, in November 1864. This was part of "The Waikato immigration scheme"the passenger list states
"Alice Glover 22 Single Domestic servant" I have read that she came from Kilmore,but which one,
In December 1865 she married George Heald in Auckland.
Can anyone help me with this please,

On her marraige certificate does it state her parents names?

As you've probably seen there are quite a number of places named Kilmore in Ireland - see the townland database at : www.thecore.com/seanruad

The Glover surname does not seem to be very frequent in Ireland and an analysis of surnames listed on Griffiths valuation (land valuation survey 1850s/60s) show that most were located in counties Down & Antrim :

1.      Down      26     (no of households listed)
2.      Antrim         25   
3.      Roscommon   16   
4.      Cork      13   
5.      Derry      5   
6.      Limerick      4   

(there were also a smaller numbers of Glover households listed in other counties)

Hi ambyrne1 ,

No marriage certificates had very liitle information on them in 1865 in NZ,I was wondering if there may be somewhere in Ireland that had records of "The Waikato immigration scheme" or details of the passengers on the "Ganges".
The little bit of information here in NZ says most of the passengers came from " Ulster in the north-east of Ireland , with a majority of Protestants"
The Waikato Immigration Scheme" was intended to bring people here with free passage and a land grant if they remained on the land for 3 years.
This is part of a letter sent to the NZ immigration board in 1864 before the Ganges left Ireland.
"To equalise as far as possible the sexes, we forward a
considerable number of unmarried females, per Ganges. The great
majority of these intend remaining in Auckland, and it is with this
understanding that we give them free passages."

Griffiths Valuation which lists householders c 1850 shows a number of Glover families in the parish of Kilmore in county Armagh.

lots of information about this scheme.
The Ganges to new zealand the ship that Alice Glover was on became known as the Death Ship.  It sailed with 474 but lost 54 children and 2 Adults.
This is from The Daily Southern Cross Volume XX1 Issue 2363 - 15/2/1865 Page 4 so there must be a lot of information on this ship.
Get in touch with The National Library of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin2, Ireland.  they should beable to put you on the right path.

My Family was on that Ship
I will see what I can find as I copied some info out of books whilst I was in NZ last year.

Unfortunately the Archives list I have does not show your Alice
My niece obviously only copied some pages.
If the Marriage Cert shows little info ( I have one from 1869 that has good info)then
do you have her Death Cert?

I suggest you cross check the lists as there are 2 other Clovers on 1 list Mary and Mary J CLOVER. Also look for McGlover etc.

Sorry I cant be more help. Hopefully the Irish end will be.

My Families are CUMMING ( actually Cummins) and PRATT ( Catherine Pratt was nee Cummmins)
My Great/Grandmother Margaret not only managed to keep all her children alive she managed to give birth as well. Apparently straight after docking she ran up the Hill to find the nearest Priest to baptise him
They bred them tough in Tinryland, Carlow
The Pratts were not so lucky and lost a couple of children.
There was another family the Polands that lost all their children which was incredibly sad. They left 1 child behind as they were only allowed to emigrate with a certain no. Luckily he arrived in NZ later and married Agnes Cummins.

Apparently the voyage was hell and they sat in the Harbour for a couple of days for the Ship to be cleaned before they were allowed to dock.
