PALMER/SOUTHWOOD marriage & Census
« on: Tuesday 17 November 09 20:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I would like information regarding Joseph Palmer and Elizabeth Southwood they may of married about 1828.
Would like any census for this couple they had a daughter by the name of Lavinia in 1829.
On Lavinia's death certificate it states her parents were hotel keepers in Taunton.

There seems to be a large age gap between husband and wife, 20 years, or is this a daughter, as it would make her 10 when Caroline is born?   But his wife was still alive much later according to the death cert.  Now I am confused!
Lavinia is married by the 1851 census.

Cheers

I can't identify Joseph and Elizabeth in 1851 to check their relationship  :(

Who does Lavinia marry? I'm asking because I can see a Lavinia Palmer born Somerset until 1861, so maybe there were 2 in fact?

She married a Beadon Davey in Nether Stowey 1848.  You may be right with another family.  I wonder what happened to the one I am looking for?  They may of been out of the area?

Well, the 1861 census shows she was from Nether Stowey, so my 1841 census does look correct.

Finally found them in 1851 I believe:

1851
HO107/1924 23 18
Over Stowey
Joseph Palmer, head, 65, Labourer Broom Maker, b. Somerset Over Stowey
Elizth, wife, 35, b. Taunton
Wm, son, 13, b. Nr Stowey
Henry, son, 11, b. do.
George, son, 8, b. Over Stowey
Eliz, dau, 5, b. do.
Robt, son, 3, b. do.
M Ann, dau, 8 mo, b. do.

Obvioulsy a second wife then!

Well he must of still had it in him at 65, a 8mth old baby and a wife 30 years younger, still it does not say hotel keeper  I wonder if they had it right on the death cert?

Yes, makes you wonder! If it were my family, I think I'd go for Lavinia's marriage cert to confirm her father's details.

 :)

PS He had even more children according to the 1861 and 1871 censuses. Thomas 1852, Eliza 1854, James 1856 and Edwin J 1865!

I think I can shed some light on Joseph Palmer and his wife Elizabeth as they are my ancestors. Joseph Palmer was baptised on 17th June 1792 at Over Stowey. He married Elizabeth Southwood on 25th May 1816. I believe Elizabeth died in 1837 or 1838 and Joseph remarried on 23rd September 1838 this time to another Elizabeth, Elizabeth Sparks.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate of Joseph to Elizabeth Sparks where Jospeh is described as a widower.

If you would like to send me a personal message I can give you some fyrther information. The Palmers were a prolific family in Over and Nether Stowey and you will find another Joseph and Elizabeth Palmer in those villages.
