Eliminate from Enquiries
« on: Friday 27 November 09 07:31 GMT (UK) »
1890/1 Gt grandfather John Greer arrived in Port Chalmers with his wife Eliza Anne, son William, and father William whose wife obviously predeceased him.
William (the elder) died in 1900 aged 85, and is buried in Romahapa (Sth Otago). According to the records he was survived by a son - John, and 2 daughters. If either of these daughters remained in Donegal, Ireland, then I dont believe William would have travelled here at the age of 75. Therefore boh daughters must have travelled here as well. In fact I have actually located one of them - Anne Greer, who married William Chapman in Dunedin in 1895.
UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE THE OTHER.
Surfing many sites I have come up with a possibility who tends to fit the age range reasonably well.
Margaret GREER aged 17 travelled to Port Chalmers in 1878.
I need some help finding if/ when she married, and to whom. BDM shows 4 potential marriages but I would like to narrow the options before getting copies of certificates.
Greer - Donegal
McNulty - Sligo
McConnell - Donegal
McBeath - Donegal
Fletcher - Mull
McPhail - Mull
Umphray - Shetlands
Robson - Durham

Hello Bantry

Did the death certificate of William GREER (senior) d. 1900, state the age of this daughter ?
(Edit:   Am guessing approximate year of birth is the same as for the Margaret arriving in 1878 ?)

I note you also say you have located, four "possible" marriages.

Armed with the names of "those spouses", have you tried searching the online death index for a Margaret  ? / ? / ? or / ? with a year of birth which matches (or near matches) that of Margaret GREER ?

Hi Lu

(1) Margaret arrived at Port Chalmers 1878 aged 17 which if accurate gives a birth year around 1861 which ties in fairly well with the registration of death for William

(2) No have not done a BDM search with variables - will have to try that out

Anne / Annie is confirmed through her parents William Greer & Eliza Jane McBeath as in the marriage register and her given age  in that register and Dunedin cemetery records also tie in with the death register entry for William. The cemetry record incorrectly lists her as a native of NZ - should be Donegal, Ireland, as per the marriage register.

Hi Graeme

Can rule out "the 1882 marriage to a Walter ANDERSON" :

From register of Presbyterian marriages ...

Alexandra/Clyde Parish

3 February 1882
Margaret GREER - aged 35 (bc 1847) - bride signed "her mark"
Walter ANDERSON - (35)

*  This Margaret GREER was possibly the lady who arrived per vessel "Nelson" -1874 - Otago - aged 28 - ex Co. Armagh ??

[Two sons of this marriage show on Cenotaph database - parents address recorded as Lawrence, Otago.]

[Margaret GREER - Charles PACKWOOD - 1882]

Death

1918 - PACKWOOD - Margaret - aged 61 (bc 1857)

[Probably not this one either ??? ]

thanks for your hard work

both John Allen & James Craig are mentioned in the Balclutha Genealogy website, and rightly or wrongly this is the part of the country I want to concentrate on.
