Gleeson family, Birr
« on: Friday 27 November 09 21:19 GMT (UK) »
My maternal grandmother, Maria Kearns (nee Gleeson) was born in Birr on 1st of May 1902. I have a copy of her birth certificate showing this date.

Her father is shown as John Gleeson of Mill Street, Birr and his rank or profession as labourer. Her mother is Kate Gleeson, formerly Parnell. The birth was registered on 5th June 1902, Thomas Woods being the registrar.

Maria married my Grandad, John Patrick Kearns, in Birr on 22nd January 1923. I have about half of what is left of the original Certificate of Marriage, it's somewhat dog eared and faded. One of the winesses to the marriage is Pat Gleeson.

Sometime between 1923 and 1930 John and Maria left Ireland settling in Sheffield, England. I say 1930 as my Mother, Maureen, was born in Sheffield on 24th January 1930. As my Grandparents made a new life in Sheffield they gradually lost contact with the families in Birr.

Around 1982 I took my Grandmother back to Birr for a visit. We managed to find her younger brother Joe, they hadn't seen each other for over 50 years, it was a little emotional to say the least. Joe was around a year younger than Maria.

All, including my mother, are now deceased. I have recently had a look at the 1911 census on the National Archives site. It shows a Gleeson family living at 6 Glebe Street, Birr. It shows John as the head of the family, Kate his wife, they have 6 children including a son Patrick and a daughter Maria, the youngest child is Joseph. However my Grandmothers age doesn't quite 'fit'. If she was born on 1st May 1902 she would have been 8 on 2nd April 1911, the Form A shows the Maria at 6 Glebe Street as 6 years old. The information also shows her father John as being a Military Pensioner.

The other children in the Glebe Street family are Mary, Alice and Bridget.

Does anyone have any information relating to this Gleeson family ?

enfield, seanmac, I appreciate the time you've taken to assist in my research, thank you.

There's a lot to read through in the Birr Family Roots information you've supplied and I'll visit the web site to see if there's any more pieces of the jigsaw I can find. The only details I have of the Parnell connection is that shown on Marias birth crtificate.

As to the Patrick who was killed in action I have nothing else at this time that could connect him to 'my' Gleeson family.
