*completed* John Currie of Ardbeg
« on: Saturday 28 November 09 05:54 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to define some details about my ancestor John Currie (yes I know there are a lot).
Specifically my John Currie is born abt 1819 Rothesay Bay, Isle of Bute.  Died 25 Feb 1886 Ardbeg Farm, Rothesay Bay, Isle of Bute.

First marriage May 1841 Ardbeg Farm to: Margaret Sproul born abt 1824 Paisley, Renfrewshire. Died abt 1869

(Possible) Second marriage 1872 Parish of North Bute to: Agnes Barr (of Cranslag Loan (spelling?).

From previous family research we have John's parents as John Currie (prob born Ardbeg Farm) and Janet Campbell.
And their children were (including John Currie (jnr):
Daniel Currie b. 1821
William Currie b. 1823
Margaret Currie b. 1825
Archibald Currie b. 1827 d. Nov 28 1912 Otago, New Zealand
Alexander Currie b. 1831
Duncan Currie b. 1833
Janet Currie b. abt 1839 (?)

Now I have some new conflicting data that shows John Curries parents may be Elizabeth Currie and John Currie, and his paternal grandparents John Currie and Isabell McKinnan (from Campbelltown, Argyll).

Is someone able to
1. tell me John Currie's correct parentage and grandparentage please?
2. give me some dob or deaths and marriage dates for the parents and grandparents.

Much obliged if anyone can help. I am happy to share info about the Curries that I have, as a few ended up in NZ (where I was born and raised).
Cheers J

Hello ev,
thanks heaps for your info that you found. I checked out the website FreeCen, and haven't had any luck finding the records you found for the Currie family  ???

is there some trick to searching on that site?? I have many other ancestors in Scotland I would like to try to find, and so far have had no luck  :(

Thanks again. Oh that Buteshire website was already on my list, but as you say it is more general. Great read tho!

hi J

http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

on the search page on freeCEN
year - 1841
surname - currie
first name - john
age - 54
age or year range - exact

on the right hand side of the search page
street - ardbeg farm
then press find
this should give you one entry
press show household

if you go back to the search page change the year to 1851 put in the same thing as the 1841 but put the age in as 32(this is john currie junior)
again 1 result should come up
if you view the household page press next household at top or bottom of page
to show the rest of the family

the 1861 is same as before but john currie(junior) is now 42

to find his mother in 1861 enter janet currie age 62 and address shore street

Hi J

John Currie and Margaret Sproul were my great-grandparents on my paternal grandmother's side. My grandmother, their daughter Jane Sproul Currie was born at Ardbeg Farm on 1st January 1858.

I'd be intrigued to know which branch of the family you're on as I only discovered the New Zealand link after reading your post. I'm not sure whether it's OK to post email addresses here so I'll wait for a reply before doing so.

Kind regards
David

Hi Dave,

nice to meet a fellow Currie relative, albeit fairly distant. From what I understand it is a no-no to post your private email addresses. And I think you need to have more than one "post" up your sleeve before you can PM (personally message) someone. I will have a go at sending you a PM in the coming week (bit busy with my day job at the mo sadly).

Chat soon, regards J

No problem J

Just if you get a chance any info you have prior to John Currie senior on the Currie branch of the family would be a great help. If there's any info I can help you with please let me know.

Regards
David

Hi everyone.
Not sure how much help this is but John Currie born abt 1820 Ardbeg was a widower when he married my GT GT Grandmother in 1872. Her name at the time was Agnes Barr, her husband James Barr having died approx 1868. Her maiden name was Crawford and she was born abt 1830 Kilwinning Ayrshire.
Agnes had 5 children with James including my GT Grandmother Janet Montgomery Barr who eventually migrated to NZ.
John and Agnes Currie had a daughter Agnes in 1876.
From the records I have accessed it appears the Barrs, Crawfords and Currie's developed a number of family ties over the generations.
Janet must have lived at or frequently visited Ardbeg as a young child before moving into Rothesay and then migrating to NZ. My father spoke of her reminisences, and I believe he visited Ardbeg when he toured the UK and Europe in the 1950's.
