When did train between Melb & Sydney start?
« on: Sunday 29 November 09 02:32 GMT (UK) »

My gggfather travelled between Melb & Sydney on a number of occasions between 1870's to 1900. I can't find him arriving in Melb or Sydney by ship on some trips. Could he have travelled by train? If so, when did train travel start between those 2 capital cities? Any idea how long the trip took back then?

Regards,
acbsydney

This may be useful...scroll down to the period you are seeking.

If he travelled on a coastal trader that may have only carried a few passengers, you may not find any records.

Hi

The PROV have indexed outward Interstate Shipping from Victoria up to 1896 (link below) but unfortunately Inward is only from overseas. The Inward interstate passenger lists and the outward after 1896 (to 1923) are on the films but are not indexed
