Mt Gambier, S. A. Lake Terrace Cemetery
« on: Tuesday 01 December 09 23:37 GMT (UK) »
Could some kind soul visit Lake Terrace Cemetery in Mt. Gambier, and Grave or Plot number 390 contains the remains of:

1. William Ladlow who died 1936 aged 87.
2. Elizabeth Ladlow who died 1938 aged 82.
3. William James Wheater who died 4/10/1904 aged 10 months.
4. Rebecca Ann Ladlow who died 23/10/1904 aged 30.

I would like to know if there is a headstone and an inscription.  Perhaps an image would be fantastic.

This would go a long way to solving one of those brick walls you talk about.

A great Aunt tells me that William Laidlaw changed his name to William Ladlow, she doesn't know why, and I would like to find out.  The only connection I can find is this grave.  William Laidlaw's daughter, Emily Grace (or Grace Emily) married a William Gant Wheater.

I can't find a death for William Laidlaw, so perhaps he did change his name.

Many thanks, Kevin

Hi Kevin  me again,

William Wheater { 29 Single } m Grace Emily LAIDLAW { 22 Single } 2.7.1901  Residence of Brides parents Mt Gambier . Father of Groom James Wheater. Father of Bride : William LAIDLAW 208/13

It looks like the children used both LADLOW and LAIDLOW .
There was another LADLOW in Mt Gambier at the time- Robert LADLOW  one of his daughters married in Mt Gambier in 1878.
Looking at the SA BDM it looks like these families used LADLOW/LAIDLOW/ LAIDLAW
Just found another birth:
Keith Roderick LAIDLAW b 18.4.1896 Father William LAIDLAW mother  Elizabeth ASTON Glenburnie 583/50

Alison

Hi Kevin,

Faith from Grave Secrets has photographed the graves at Lake Terrace. Her photos are for sale very cheaply. (Just $1 each) If no-one is able to help you may consider using Faith's service.

Many thanks Alison2763, all that information is fantastic.   ;D   ;D   ;D  It seems that both names have been used from time to time.  At least it confirms that the names Laidlaw and Ladlow are linked.  One cannot doubt Great Aunts ...... hehehehe!!!

Thanks Kris, I have ordered the photos of the headstones I want.  Very reasonable.

One more piece of information to find is the resting place of James Wheater senior.  According the the "Hamilton Spectator" newspaper James WHEATER, an old Sandford brickmaker was found dead near "Muntham" Station on 2 July 1880.

But his death is not in the Victorian indexes.

The search continues.

Thanks again, Kevin

Here's a long shot Kevin.
James WHEELER d  1880  Aged 48 no parents, birthplace, place of death. #7625
I would be applying for the inquest details before the possible death certificate anyway, seems it has not much info on it even if it is him.

WOW!!  Thanks Alison, you've really been working overtime.

I don't think James Wheeler is mine, but the James Wheater Inquest 1880 fit in with the Hamilton Newspaper article.  It's a shame PROV Inquests are not on-line as I find it difficult to get there in person.  Perhaps one day.

It'll take a bit to sort it out.

Keep 'em coming.

Thanks, Kevin
